Do Meatless Monday on World Vegetarian Day | October 1st

September 30, 2012

Monday, October 1st is World Vegetarian Day.  Whether you’ve been a vegetarian for years, or just decided to join this Meatless Monday craze, local restaurants will be offering delicious options to celebrate going meatless.  From juicy portobello mushroom sandwiches to flavorful salad entrees, you won’t be sacrificing on taste when you cut out the meat.

When you hear the name, “Brazen BBQ,” the word, “vegetarian” may not come to mind.  October is Vegetarian Awareness Month, and even this award-winning Southern smokehouse has a meatless option to savor. Brazen’s delectable vegetarian version of The Smokehouse Salad is served with black bean and roasted corn relish, avocado, queso fresco, tobacco onions, roasted red peppers, their flavorful chipotle ranch dressing, and of course, “meaty” portobello mushrooms.

Pizza without pepperoni?  At 2Good2B Bakery & Café you won’t miss the meat with their Neapolian-Crusted Pizza Margherita. Sun-ripened tomatoes, basil, mozzarella, and an olive oil drizzle speak for themselves when it comes to a full range of flavors. And the gluten-free crust at 2Good2B will keep you comin’ back for more.

If you are craving a meat-free entree that is sure to please your palate, La Jolla’s Prospect Bar & Grill is spot-on with their Grilled Veggie Tacos. Roasted zucchini, mushrooms and onions along with tomatoes and fresh guacamole create a fiesta of flavors that you won’t want to miss. Plus, they have a Portobello Mushroom Sandwich with pesto aioli and all of the trimmings that could spin your wheels into believing you’ve discovered the other white meat.

When it comes to the ultimate veggie burger, barleymash takes the lead. A Ratner’s natural veggie patty is griddled with goat cheese, onions, tomatoes, cucumbers, field greens, and sprouts and served on one of barleymash’s famous homemade barley-beer buns. Served with house fries or chili-beer slaw, this meal is sure to inspire even the most dedicated carnivore to visit - and perhaps even permanently consider - the lighter side of dining.

At Avenue 5 Restaurant & Bar, World Vegetarian Day is best celebrated with destination-inspired salads. Try either their Going Greek, South of France or TJ Salad, and enjoy a culinary “Stay-cation” in America’s Finest City. Of course, if you’re not the adventurous type, their Balboa Park Salad will give you all the comforts of home with an arrangement of mixed greens, cranberries, quinoa, grilled vegetables, toasted almonds, and tasty thyme vinaigrette.
