I think this is just a stock photo for the real thing.

Over the past few years, San Diego has emerged as a culinary starlet, founded on farm-to-table menus and microbrews. But as far as the dining scene has come, east coasters who’ve relocated to the city know that it is lacking in one particular area - sandwiches. Sure, any restaurant can throw together a few slabs of meat, some greens and a bun, but nothing compares to authentic subs of the east coast variety.  Luckily, SD is about to get one step closer to redeeming their sub reputation. Bite of Boston is a family owned and operated submarine sandwich shop set to open its third location in Pacific Beach in late May 2013.

The real thing as pictured on Yelp
Husband and wife Bob and Hope Major opened the first Bite of Boston in Rancho Bernardo in 2009 and a second in UTC in 2011. They have been slowly but surely building a reputation for top-notch lobster rolls and cold cut subs.

“We started because we were trying to bring a bit of East coast flavor to the West coast,” Major said. “We had a very unique idea that has worked out for us, and we’re excited to get into Pacific Beach.”

The Majors’ unique idea is one that centers on fresh Atlantic seafood and high-quality breads. In fact, Bob Major picks up fresh shipments of seafood, including Atlantic lobster, twice a week. Fresh rolls are imported from Piantedosi Bakery in the heart of Boston, and all cold cuts come straight from Philadelphia-based Dietz & Watson.  Some of the already loved items on Bite of Boston’s menu include lobster rolls (they make 200-300 per day!), Prime Rib Sandwich, Philly Cheesesteak, fried clams and clam chowder.

“We know there are a lot of Bostonians in Pacific Beach, and certainly tourists who visit the beaches will appreciate what we have to offer,” Major said. “But really, we welcome anyone to come in, have a nice time and enjoy the food.”

Bite of Boston does not serve alcohol, making it a far cry from some of the typical Mission Boulevard establishments, but Major promises a friendly atmosphere, where diners can relax and watch local sports, or cheer on their Boston teams from afar.

In addition to a fast-casual dine-in experience, Bite of Boston offers catering and delivery services. The restaurant frequently features specials on Living Social, and is tied in with GrubHub for individuals who want to order online.

Bite of Boston will be located at 4651 Mission Boulevard in Pacific Beach.  Learn more at www.biteofboston.net and by following on Facebook.
