Chef Rich Sweeney and Good Time Design Team Up for Southpaw Social Club | Opening Today in Downtown San Diego

June 28, 2013

From Good Time Design and Chef Rich Sweeney (of R Gang Eatery), Southpaw Social Club opens its doors today and will surely be a downtown hotspot, especially during baseball season due to its ideal location adjacent to Petco Park!  SDV cannot wait to see what former Top Chef contestant Sweeney and the always impressive entertainment consulting group GTD have in store for us!

Southpaw Social Club is a Southern, barrelhouse-influenced watering hole and eatery, paying homage to the barnstorming baseball days of old. Neighboring Petco Park, Southpaw will serve up heritage-inspired offerings from the kitchen to be washed down with a vast line-up of locally brewed ales and flavorful lemonade-based libations.

A collaboration between chefs Rich Sweeney of R Gang Eatery, Todd Nash of the Blind Burro and Chris Trevisin of Vintana, the menu features unpretentious American craft classics. It reflects a time when food wasn’t too complicated and gathering together was as much about the company you kept as it was about sharing a delicious, simple meal made from ingredients sourced from the local community.

Southpaw’s menu focuses on an assortment of grilled flatbreads, social plates, supper club style entrees and classic sandwich and salad combinations. Starting soon, seafood Sundays will include crawfish and crab boils on the back patio. The bar features 32 taps of craft beer and lemonade-based craft cocktails designed by Blind Tiger Cocktail Company.

Located in the historic Schiefer & Sons Aeroplane Co. building, Southpaw Social Club features distressed barn timber, industrial aged steel, historical brick, Edison light bulbs and lacquered sawdust flooring. Hanging on the dining room wall is an oversized portrait painted by a Good Time Design employee of John Wesley Donaldson, the unsung legend of baseball’s glory days, champion of the Negro Baseball League’s pursuits in sports equality, and arguably the best left-hander of all time.

Southpaw follows the Good Time Design’s signature style of creating comfortable and approachable spaces where friends, new and old, can gather to relax, socialize and let loose. The venue includes a smoke-free outdoor seating area on J Street, a back patio looking out onto Petco Park, and two dining areas inside, with the front designated as family friendly.

Good Time Design owns and operates 12 restaurants and bars, including Bub's at the Ballpark, The Blind Burro, Cat Eye Club, Lucky's Lunch Counter, Block No. 16 Union & Spirits and now their newest venue, Southpaw Social Club.

Southpaw Social Club is located at 815 J St. in downtown San Diego and will be open daily from 11AM to 2AM.  The full menu is served until 10 PM (Mon-Thur) and 11PM (Fri-Sat), and flatbreads are served until 1AM everyday. Social hour is from 4 to 7PM weekdays.
