Sammy's Woodfired Pizza & Grill has held craft beer dinners in the past, but on Wednesday, November 20, the Del Mar Highlands Town Center location offered its first wine pairing dinner - four courses complemented by tasty varieties of Milestone Wines. This meal offered an incredible value for $30 per person at Sammy's beautiful setting, a unique location with old world charm and Sammy's consistently delicious and diverse culinary creations.
Sammy's has locations all over Southern California (and Nevada) and the brand prides itself on offering a lengthy menu with Italian and Mediterranean influence, including many dishes for those with dietary restrictions (vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free). With their pairing dinners, they offer more of an interactive experience than many other eateries, with the vintner presenting and explaining each pairing, making it educational as well as nutritionally gratifying. During this particular evening, our dishes and wine counterparts were served with enthusiastic explanations by Eric Runyon, a portfolio manager for Southern Wine & Spirits, a leading distributor of fine wines and spirits.
We began with a brie, mushroom and truffle oil pizza, served with Milestone Chardonnay. Sammy's pizza is legit, and this version may be our favorite. Just look at it - so creamy and rich, and perfectly counterbalanced by the fresh, fruit forward style of the wine. This course was definitely one of the best!
Sammy's is consistently a tremendous value, every meal ultimately simple, satisfying and delicious. The consideration demonstrated by this restaurant in an era of varied dietary restrictions is something that other restauranteurs can most definitely learn from.
