Mama’s Kitchen Celebrates 23rd Annual Mama’s Day at the Hyatt Regency La Jolla at Aventine | Friday, May 9

April 21, 2014

Support a great cause while sipping refreshing cocktails and savoring special dishes created and served by San Diego’s finest chefs and restaurants. The 23rd installment of “Mama’s Day” returns to the Hyatt Regency La Jolla at Aventine on Friday, May 9 from 6:30-9:30pm. The extraordinary culinary poolside affair is a major source of funding for Mama’s Kitchen - a local nonprofit organization which cooks and delivers hot, nutrition-specific meals free of charge to men, women and children affected by AIDS or cancer throughout San Diego County.

Held the Friday evening before Mother’s Day, Mama’s Day 2014 features more than 55 of San Diego’s premier restaurants, hotels, wineries and catering companies who graciously donate delicious samples for nearly 700 attendees. Guests enjoy music, food and fun throughout the evening, as well as bidding on an extensive silent auction, entering an opportunity drawing for outstanding prizes, and a Wine Vault, with a chance to win more than $1,000 worth of premium wines. Sam “The Cooking Guy” Zien returns for the sixth consecutive year as the event’s culinary host.

“Mama’s Day is the original food tasting event in San Diego and our largest annual fundraiser,” says Alberto Cortés, executive director, Mama’s Kitchen. “The commitment we receive from the region’s top culinary professionals, our volunteers and community members, continually positions Mama’s Day as one of the most sought-after events to attend. This dedication enables Mama’s Kitchen to continue to serve meals to critically ill clients throughout San Diego County at no charge.”

The VIP Reception features Sam “The Cooking Guy” Zien who will treat guests to an exclusive and interactive food presentation. VIP guests also enjoy a hosted bar sponsored by Stone Brewing Co., St. Petersburg Vodka and Groundswell Brewing Company, from 5:30 - 8:00pm. The VIP Reception featuring Zien is from 5:30 - 6:30pm, and guests are encouraged to arrive early so they don’t miss out on the show. The VIP Cabana Lounge is open throughout the evening’s festivities.

Mama’s Kitchen was founded in 1990 when volunteers from the AIDS Assistance Fund discovered that many of their clients were becoming too ill to take care of themselves. They realized that a reliable home meal delivery service was needed to ensure that these individuals would continue to receive nutritious, life-sustaining food. In 2004, Mama’s Pantry was opened to provide individuals with HIV/AIDS who are able to prepare meals the opportunity to supplement their nutritional needs. Mama’s Kitchen has served nearly seven million meals since it was founded and has never turned away a client who qualified for our services. Today, the organization has expanded its service to San Diegans affected by either AIDS or cancer. Mama’s Kitchen provides three meals a day, for every day of the year, free of charge, to approximately 350 men, women, and children in San Diego County.

Mama’s Day 2014 is presented by Nordstrom and hosted by Sycuan Casino. For more information, please contact Ben Coyle at (619) 233-6262 or ben@mamaskitchen.org, and learn more and make a donation at mamaskitchen.org.
