San Diego's Only Independent Comercial Radio Station Is No More | RIP To 102.1 KPRI - April 1, 1996 - September 28, 2015

September 28, 2015

After almost 20 years on the air, San Diego's 102.1 KPRI has announced that it will be no more, citing the modern challenges of the radio business for independent broadcasters. It has accepted an offer from Rocklin, CA-based Educational Media Foundation, which typically operates radio networks specializing in adult contemporary Christian music, and the format will change immediately.

KPRI was the only independently owned and operated commercial radio station in the San Diego market. Founded on April 1, 1996 by Robert "Bob" Hughes and Jonathan Schwartz, the station played alternative rock music and frequently held concerts around the San Diego area.

"We wanted to give your our very best and go out rocking!" explained owner Robert Hughes. "Thank you for the privilege of serving you over the past two decades. Thank you for the opportunity to build a community with you around great music and extraordinary artists in a world class city."
