Bull & Grain Shutters After Short Tenure In San Diego's Hillcrest Neighborhood

August 3, 2017

Bull & Grain opened only last Fall, but the modern American-style bar & grill has already closed its doors for business, making itself another statistic in the history of the cursed building at 1263 University Avenue in San Diego's Hillcrest community.

Simon Wolujewicz opened Bull & Grain in late-September 2016 full of optimism and excitement from the community, as he had secured a big name local chef to lead the kitchen. Executive Chef Daniel Barron created a modern American comfort food menu and had the restaurant initially doing well, but he left the employ of Bull & Grain this past April, seemingly not on good terms. This was the start of a downward spiral that management could not recover from, and ownership was forced to close Bull & Grain as of today after rumors of a mutiny of sorts in the kitchen. We reached out to Wolujewicz who confirmed the closure but declined to comment any further.

1263 University Avenue has housed numerous tenants over the last few years, as it appears to be one of those doomed spaces that we all have heard about or seen in one form or another. Most recently, the building was the site of the boardgame-centric Tabletop Commons, which closed in early July 2016 after only a little more than a year in business. Prior to that, the location housed Commonwealth Ultra Lounge, which also did not make it to the 2 year mark. Before that, The Ranch gave a valiant attempt at success in the space before ultimately failing in a short period.
