San Diego's Hard Rock Cafe To Shutter By Year's End

September 16, 2017

A mainstay in downtown San Diego for nearly 20 years, Hard Rock Cafe has announced that it will close its doors for business by year's end.

"On December 31, 2017, Hard Rock Cafe San Diego, located at 801 4th Ave., will be closing," Hard Rock International stated in a released statement. "San Diego is an important market for Hard Rock International and we are committed to our presence in the market with the Hard Rock Hotel San Diego. We are actively exploring other opportunities and expect to bring the cafe back to the area at the right time and in a new great location."

Opened on July 28, 1998 in downtown San Diego, the rock 'n' roll-themed Hard Rock Cafe has suffered over recent years as the brand lost the appeal it once had due to social trends of stigmatizing such corporate chains as cliché. Hard Rock International also operates the Hard Rock Hotel San Diego, which will be unaffected by the closure of the cafe. There is no word yet on who will takeover the space at 801 4th Avenue.
