StreetCar Merchants Of Fried Chicken Closes La Jolla Location | Parachute Brunch & Supper Room To Open In Its Place

September 30, 2017

Less than a year after opening the company's second area location, Streetcar Merchants of Fried Chicken, Doughnuts & Coffee has closed its La Jolla restaurant. Parachute Brunch & Supper Room will open in the space next week

Founded by Ron Suel and RaVae Smith, the original Streetcar location opened in North Park in early 2015, offering a Southern-inspired menu by Chef Dante Ross that was centered around fried chicken and donuts. The 4,000+ square foot La Jolla branch opened in December 2016 with an expanded food menu that utilized the space's Woodstone oven that was left by the prior tenant, Amici's East Coast Pizzeria. Previously planning to open a third Streetcar location in downtown San Diego, Suel has decided to change the name of the concept to Suckerfree. The company is also actively looking for a Pacific Beach location to install another Streetcar outpost.

"The downtown location is still going to be a southern restaurant and bar, but what we discovered in La Jolla was that even though we were larger and did a lot more food items most guests just assumed that we did the same menu," said Suel. "The confusion was too great and we don’t want that with Gaslamp."

Suckerfree will sit within the 5,000 square-foot space at 751 4th Avenue in downtown San Diego that last housed Arhat Bistro Chinese Cuisine. The menu will be based around classic Southern cuisine, including Seul's patented fried chicken, slow smoked BBQ ribs, catfish, fried okra, as well as twists on traditional recipes like crispy pig ear lettuce wraps, soul food burritos and mac n' cheese flights. Suckerfree will have a full liquor license and is anticipated to open in early 2018.

"We didn’t advertise the La Jolla business to sell, rather it was a concept that looked at the space prior to our securing it that approached us," explained owner Ron Suel on the decision to sell the La Jolla location "They came to me about selling and the deal simply made business sense. Plus I feel their model will make better use of the restaurant's space."

Installing into the standalone building at 801 Prospect Street in La Jolla is Parachute, a brunch & supper room that was originally Seul's idea. Owned by Chef Matt Cranert and Kristy Olivolo, Parachute will open on October 4 with a menu of elevated American comfort food, including fried chicken, flatbreads, sandwiches, and items spanning the spectrum from breakfast and dinner, as well as beer and wine. Chef Cranert is a Culinary Institute of America graduate that interned at CIA Greystone in Napa. The Northern California native was a chef at Duke's in Waikiki, HI, but gained the majority of his experience at various restaurants in the Cincinnati, Ohio area. Once opened, Parachute will operate from 7am to 3pm daily for brunch and 5-9pm for dinner.
