A staple for Southern comfort food in San Diego for around 50 years, Sister Pee Wee's Soul Food has shuttered in Logan Heights.
Rising rents in San Diego have forced another longtime restaurant out of business. After a half-century in service, one of San Diego's last spots for Southern-style soul food closed its doors as of September 28. Sister Pee Wee's Soul Food opened in the 1960s and has been dishing out a daily-changing menu of comfort food staples like BBQ ribs, fried chicken, smothered pork chops, collard greens, macaroni and cheese, green beans, black-eyed peas and more from the quaint building at the corner of 30th & Imperial.
Barbara "Sister Pee Wee" Harris moved to San Diego from Little Rock, Arkansas when she was 16 years old. Since her arrival in San Diego, she has operated her lunch counter while raising eight kids and doing shift work as a nurse. Word on the street is that there is a potential for Sister Pee Wee's to reopen if they can get funding to deal with back rent and administrative expenses.
