The owner of San Diego's historic Turf Supper Club in Golden Hill has purchased another longstanding local institution - Nunu's Cocktail Lounge in Hillcrest.
A San Diego destination for stiff cocktails and grill-your-own steaks since the 1950s, Turf Supper Club has been owned by brothers Jon and Peter Stamatopoulos since late 2008. Well, Jon must have a soft spot in his heart for historic haunts because he recently took ownership of Nunu's Cocktail Lounge, a dive bar that has been a San Diego mainstay since the 1960s. Stamatopoulos purchased the dive bar for an undisclosed sum from Arthur & Martha Sisk, who had owned it since 1993.
New ownership says to expect "the same Nunu's, only better". The historic haunt will soon close for an interior upgrade.Nunu's had a minor revamp in 2014, when a large west-facing window was installed to let more light in, and the fireplace was removed, the patio expanded and a few older booths were replaced with two-tops. The upcoming renovations will further modernize the space. Nunu's will continue to serve a menu of cheesteaks, sandwiches, burgers, wings, and other classic barfood - with only minor changes to be made to the food offerings, if any.
