Industry Vets To Bring Fernside To Former South Park Abbey Location

March 19, 2018

South Park Abbey closed last summer after 7 years in business. Moving into the prime corner space at 1946 Fern Street in San Diego's South Park hood is a project from three longtime industry veterans. Fernside is expected to open this Summer and aims to be an "all-purpose neighborhood bar serving forward-thinking cocktails and food focused on quality ingredients with a vibe that doesn't take itself too seriously."

Anticipated to open as early as this June, Fernside is a bar & restaurant concept from Adam Cook, who also owns North Park's Bluefoot Bar & Lounge and co-owned Soda Bar in Normal Heights from 2008 until selling it earlier this year. Cook has teamed up with revered local bar manager and mixologist Christian Siglin, who has previously helped develop bar programs at such noteworthy area establishments as Cutwater Spirits, The Grass Skirt, Bracero, Noble Experiement, Craft & Commerce, Sycamore Den and Bankers Hill. Siglin will be Fernside's bar manager, where he will develop a menu of unpretentious cocktails to go with a curated selection of craft beer and wine. Shane Gerde, who last ran Underbelly in North Park, will be Fernside's general manager.

The highly desirable building that will soon house Fernside is currently undergoing an extensive remodel. Expect an expanded dog-friendly patio to compliment a modern interior outfitted with plenty of high definition televisions. The eatery will serve a laid-back menu of American and California classics, including an array of chicken wings that management have already promised will be "the wings to end all wings." Expect food to be served late and brunch on the weekends, as well as a Monday "Industry" brunch service.
