Spike Africa's Fresh Fish Grill & Bar, a San Diego seafood restaurant opened by former Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. founders in 2013, is in the process of being purchased. The restaurant will soon close for business in order to transition into Gaslamp Fish House, a seafood-centric bar and eatery that will reopen this Spring.
In January 2013, Bubba Gump Shrimp Company restaurant co-founders Robert Ham and Gordon Miles emerged from their brief retirement to open Spike Africa's Fresh Fish Grill & Bar on the corner of 4th and Broadway in downtown San Diego. After 5 years in business, Spike Africa's is in the process of being purchased by Investment Restaurant Group, a joint venture from French-born Francois Patanchon, who owned Le Papagayo in Leucadia for 12 years and currently operates Tapas & Beers in downtown San Diego's Financial District, and Semy Mezouari - the longtime CEO of Saint Tropez Bistro & Beyond in Encinitas.
Spike Africa's will likely soon close for a brief interior remodel. The restaurant will reopen sometime this Spring as Gaslamp Fish House, offering a more streamlined menu centered around Mediterranean and American seafood and surf & turf dishes made with responsibly, sustainably and environmentally sourced ingredients. The restaurant will also continue to offer an extensive raw bar and serve a full bar menu with craft cocktails, local beer and a curated wine list.
