Roscoe's House of Chicken N Waffles In Final Stages Of Approvals For San Diego Location

April 15, 2019

Los Angeles-based uber-popular soul food restaurant chain Roscoe's House of Chicken N Waffles has been rumored to be opening a San Diego location for nearly 3 years. We received word this week that the company is in the final stages of approvals to open in Barrio Logan. If all goes as planned, Roscoe's may be dishing out its famed fried chicken by year's end.

Roscoe's is currently in the final approval stages to build its first San Diego restaurant in Barrio Logan at the corner of National Avenue and Sigsbee street, where plans include demolishing the current four existing buildings to construct a brand new two-story building that will house the restaurant on the base floor with an office to be sited above. The affected addresses include 1678, 1682, 1684-1686, and 1692-1695 National Avenue, as well as 926, 928, and 930 Sigsbee Street. The project will either be confirmed or denied on April 17 by the City of San Diego Development Services Department. If approved, Roscoe's hopes to open a 4,000 square foot restaurant at 1678 National Avenue by late 2019/early 2020. Johnny Sonson of Los Angeles-based design firm Draftsmen and Artists will be responsible for the construction.

Offering a crave-worthy menu of chicken, waffles, grits, gravy and other Southern dishes, Roscoe’s House of Chicken & Waffles made classic southern soul food popular in Los Angeles starting in 1975. Founded by Herb Hudson, a Harlem, NY native, Roscoe's has expanded to 7 locations throughout Los Angeles and Southern California since its inception. Roscoe's expansion to San Diego was halted due to the filing of a Chapter 11 bankruptcy in March 2016, which came months after the company was ordered to pay $3.2 million to a former employee who won a wrongful termination and discrimination lawsuit against the chain's parent company.
