The last remaining San Diego locations of fast-casual hamburger chain Fuddruckers are now permanently closed.
Founded as Freddie Fuddruckers in 1979 in San Antonio, Texas by Philip J. Romano (who went on to start Romano's Macaroni Grill), Fuddruckers is a chain of restaurants that stood out making giant hamburgers with beef ground on-site and house-made. As of last year, Fuddruckers had three locations in San Diego County - Mission Valley, La Mesa and Chula Vista, but all locations have since closed. There was also a former Fuddruckers in Mira Mesa Mall but that space was subdivided last year to become the second area locations of both Orange County-based California Fish Grill and famed Filipino fried chicken chain Max's Restaurant.
In California, there are still four remaining Fuddruckers outposts in the Bay Area. At the start of last year, there were 57 Fuddruckers nationwide, but now there are only around 40.
