In a farewell message posted to Instagram, the Oceanside-based brewery cited "a number of unfortunate circumstances" behind the decision. The team invited fans to help give the location - and its staff - the send-off they deserve with one last weekend of beers, music, and community. The final day of service at the 1,700-square-foot space on University Avenue next door to The Observatory concert venue will be Sunday, May 4.
"From every gnarly metal night to low-key hangs with your crew, thank you for being part of the chaos," the brewery wrote. "It’s been real. It’s been loud. It’s been family."
The North Park outpost debuted in June 2023 in a space previously occupied by Rouleur Brewing Company. Featuring Black Plague’s signature gothic design and darkly themed beer names like Tony Hawps and Bring Out Your Dead, the location became known for its metal-forward vibe, community events, and a curated menu.
Dubbed the "Dearly Departed" taproom by the company, the venue was a long-anticipated entry into one of San Diego’s most competitive craft beer neighborhoods. It joined the original Oceanside brewery and the "Purgatory Lounge" in downtown Escondido as part of the brand’s ambitious expansion. Despite its creative branding and enthusiastic fan base, the closure points to the continued volatility of the hospitality and craft beer industry amid rising operational costs and changing consumer trends.
While the North Park location is closing, Black Plague Brewing's Oceanside and Escondido locations remain open, and the company has suggested it will seek new ways to engage with fans across San Diego. Until then, the final weekend at the “Dearly Departed” taproom offers one last chance to raise a glass in plague-laden solidarity.
Black Plague "Dearly Departed" Taproom is located at 2899 University Avenue in San Diego's North Park. For more information, visit blackplaguebrewing.com.
