What began as a pandemic-era passion project has quickly grown into a bagel destination for locals seeking authentic, hand-rolled, boiled, and baked bagels reminiscent of those found in New York or traditional Jewish delis. Mission Bagel is a family-run business first launched by siblings Gabe Rubin and Hannah Brown.
Mission Bagel gained traction through delivery and catering, then established a dedicated following via its mobile kitchen, parked regularly at the corner of Grand Avenue and Ingraham Street in Pacific Beach. With a focused menu of classic bagel varieties, schmears, and deli salads, the truck became a morning staple in PB and earned praise from critics and food writers alike.
The forthcoming eatery is expected to offer the same chewy, golden bagels and schmear-focused sandwiches, now in a fixed location with added comfort and accessibility. Bagel lovers can expect classics like everything, sesame, poppy seed, and cinnamon raisin, paired with schmears such as scallion, strawberry, and lox, alongside egg salad, tuna salad, and whitefish salad - all made under kosher supervision.
Mission Bagel is the latest food business to activate the Garnet Avenue storefront, which had most recently housed The Friendly - a cult-favorite burger and pizza joint that shuttered its Pacific Beach location this past June. That closure marked the end of the restaurant group's coastal chapter following the sudden passing of founder Brandon Zanavich.
With its first storefront on the horizon, Mission Bagel continues its mission to elevate San Diego’s bagel scene from mediocre to meaningful. And for fans of the food truck, the new shop means more bagels, more often - no parking spot required.
Mission Bagel is expected to open in late summer 2025 at 1344 Garnet Avenue in San Diego's Pacific Beach. For more information, visit missionbagel.com.
