The new concept will take over the former home of Curiel's once-acclaimed Tuetano Taqueria, nestled between her two existing eateries - Mujer Divina Brunch Cafe and Mujer Divina Burrito & Coffee House. Unlike her sit-down brunch and grab-and-go burrito and coffee ventures, Divina Matcha will focus exclusively on elevated iced matcha drinks made with precision and premium ingredients.
"We’re thrilled to share that a brand-new matcha cafe is coming soon - Divina Matcha!" Curiel recently announced on Instagram. "Every latte is made with 100% premium ceremonial-grade matcha, giving you the real deal: bold, vibrant, and authentic. We don't just mix - we whisk."
The matcha drinks will be handcrafted to order, with a strong emphasis on freshness and mindful preparation. Curiel promises no shortcuts: "The taste might be stronger than what you're used to, but that’s because we're not cutting corners. This is matcha the way it's meant to be."
In addition to drinks, Curiel is toying with the idea of introducing a small menu of thoughtful bites - like house-made fudgy brownies, matcha scones, and even soft buns, though she jokes, "I don’t want to cook anymore." She’s been developing recipes since January but says the concept is still evolving. "At the end of the day, this is business. You have to try, see what works, what doesn't - and that’s how you get the experience to become better every day."
Tuetano Taqueria, the birria-focused restaurant that earned Curiel her Michelin recognition, closed to walk-in customers in late 2024, allowing her to focus on brunch and catering. Rather than leave the space dormant, Divina Matcha will activate the former taqueria as a cozy, grab-and-go destination for matcha lovers looking for something more elevated and intentional. Expect green and pink accents with limited indoor seating and a couple outdoor tables.
Divina Matcha is expected to open soon at 216 Third Avenue in Chula Vista. For more information, follow @divinamatcha_ on Instagram.
