At approximately 10:38pm, fire crews were dispatched to the Victorian building for a reported commercial fire. Witnesses initially believed they saw smoke near the hotel’s distinctive red roof turret, but officials later confirmed there was no fire. Instead, it turned out to be steam mistaken as smoke and a sprinkler head in the northeast turret malfunctioned, triggering the alarm and sending crews from Coronado and San Diego to the scene.
Division Chief Brian Standing said the broken sprinkler head caused minimal water damage due to its location, and no injuries were reported. Fire crews remained on site for about an hour before clearing the scene. The cause of the sprinkler malfunction remains unknown.
The alarm came just two months after Hotel del Coronado announced the completion of a $550 million, multi-year restoration of its historic Victorian structure, which included a complete overhaul of its fire protection systems with state-of-the-art equipment.
