New York-Based Joe Beez Famous Sandwiches Expands West With First San Diego County Shop

New York’s beloved Joe Beez Famous Sandwiches is bringing its over-the-top subs to San Diego County this fall.

The family-founded shop, launched in the Hudson Valley in 2001 by Joe Baganz, has built a cult following for its massive footlong sandwiches stacked with creative ingredient combos and playful names. Now, locals will finally get a taste as the East Coast brand makes its California debut with a pickup- and delivery-focused location opening in an office park in Vista.

Owner Gregory Maden, who took over the business during the pandemic, says the signature flavor won’t be lost in translation. He’s even installing a water filtration system designed to replicate the pH balance of New York City tap water, a key element in baking the bread rolls that make Joe Beez sandwiches stand out.

Joe Beez carved its identity through an annual sandwich contest where locals submitted ideas, leading to a menu of more than 100 unique offerings. Some of the shop’s fan favorites include the cheesesteak-style Balboa Sub, the stacked Run DMC, and vegetarian staples like the North End Wrap featuring eggplant cutlets. There are also plenty of vegan-friendly choices and a deep roster of wraps, salads, and breakfast sandwiches, which Maden hopes to eventually bring to the new location.

Beyond the food, Joe Beez has always prided itself on community roots. After relocating to a larger space in Kingston, NY in 2011, the sandwich shop continued to host neighborhood contests and charity efforts, cementing itself as more than just a place to eat but a hub for local connection.

The San Diego County outpost will mirror the New York menu while initially skipping breakfast service. Maden sees this as just the beginning, saying he envisions expansion beyond the first shop as locals embrace the flavor of Joe Beez’s famously hearty creations.

Joe Beez Famous Sandwiches is expected to open in October at 2349 La Mirada Drive in San Diego's North County city of Vista. For more information, visit joebeez.com.
