The closure of the longtime franchise at 5999 Severin Drive near Grossmont Hospital comes following the sale of the La Mesa Village Station shopping center, where the restaurant was housed. The 57,911-square-foot property - which spans 5901–5999 Severin Drive - was sold in June 2025 for $21.6 million to the Institute for Effective Education, according to real estate firm Commercial Asset Advisors. The buyer, a local nonprofit educational organization, is expected to repurpose the property for academic use, leading to changes in tenancy across the center.
Round Table Pizza, founded in 1959 in Menlo Park, California, has been a West Coast staple for over six decades, known for its “Pizza Royalty” slogan and signature edge-to-edge toppings, hand-rolled dough, and proprietary three-cheese blend. The La Mesa outpost embodied that tradition for nearly half a century, offering a welcoming space for birthday parties, sports banquets, and weeknight family dinners.
The closure in La Mesa comes just months after another longtime Round Table Pizza location in University City briefly shuttered before reopening under. That store - located at 3250 Governor Drive in the University City Marketplace - had initially closed after 44 years in operation but has since resumed service and plans to remain open through at least early-2026.
Round Table Pizza continues to operate more than a dozen locations throughout San Diego County, including in Mission Valley, El Cajon, and Encinitas, as part of a modernization campaign aimed at updating the brand’s image and enhancing off-premise dining options.
For East County residents, however, the closure of the Severin Drive restaurant marks the end of an era - a farewell to a neighborhood institution that helped define the local dining landscape for 45 years.
