A large law enforcement response descended on Mavericks Beach Club in San Diego’s Pacific Beach neighborhood just after midnight on Saturday night following reports of multiple stabbings outside the popular bar and restaurant.
The incident occurred around 12:07 am on Saturday night/Sunday morning, October 19, prompting police to close a section of Garnet Avenue in front of the 15,000-square-foot venue at 860 Garnet Avenue while emergency crews responded. Multiple ambulances and patrol vehicles surrounded the area as officers investigated and restricted traffic for a couple hours in the busy nightlife corridor.
According to the San Diego Police Department, a 24-year-old white male had been removed from the establishment earlier in the night before returning and confronting three male security guards outside the venue. During the altercation, the suspect stabbed all three guards with a knife. Officers arrived within minutes and took the suspect into custody, booking him on charges of attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon.
All three victims were transported to local hospitals with injuries described by police as non-life-threatening. Earlier reports indicated that one victim underwent emergency surgery, while the other two were treated and discharged. The incident remains under investigation, according to Lt. Travis Easter of SDPD’s Media Relations Unit.
In a statement to SanDiegoVille, a representative for Mavericks Beach Club said:
“We are deeply saddened by the incident that occurred last night in which three of our security guards were attacked outside our establishment. The safety and well-being of our staff and guests remain our top priority. We are working closely with law enforcement and will pursue prosecution of those responsible to the fullest extent of the law.”
Mavericks Beach Club, which opened in 2018 on the former site of Pacific Beach Bar & Grill, is owned and operated by Verant Group, the San Diego hospitality company behind barleymash, True North Tavern, The Smoking Gun, and other well-known venues. The sprawling indoor-outdoor property has become one of Pacific Beach’s busiest nightlife destinations, featuring live music, DJs, and sporting event watch parties.
This incident follows another high-profile act of violence last month at a San Diego coastal restaurant. In September, a bartender at Moe’s Steakhouse in Mission Beach was stabbed seven times in what police described as an unprovoked attack by a transient man who entered the restaurant before opening hours. The victim, Matt Harden, was hospitalized in critical condition but is recovering. The suspect, 42-year-old Hector Manuel Vasquez II, was charged with attempted murder and burglary and remains held without bail.
Mavericks Beach Club remains open and operating under normal business hours.
This is a developing story, and SanDiegoVille will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available.
