San Diego Mourns The Loss Of Chef Dalton Parr, Head Chef Of The Joint And The Bowl In Ocean Beach, Who Passed Away At 23

San Diego’s Ocean Beach community is mourning the sudden loss of Chef Dalton Parr, the head chef at The Joint Sushi & Tapas and its sister restaurant The Bowl, who passed away this past Saturday. Parr, just 23 years old, was widely known not only for his talent in the kitchen but for his warmth, humor, and deep connection to the OB hospitality scene.

The Joint announced Parr’s passing in a heartfelt message shared on Instagram, describing him as a “brother, leader, and head chef” whose impact extended far beyond the restaurant. “Dalton Parr was known to so many because of his warm hearted friendliness and super welcoming personality,” the post read. “He was a leader, a teacher, a talented chef, a friend, and mentor in life to others, even those much older than his 23 years.”

The restaurant explained that it had been closed for several days following the loss, citing the shock and devastation felt by staff and ownership alike. “The shock of losing our brother has been beyond devastating in so many ways,” the statement continued, ending with a tribute that echoed across Ocean Beach: “Rest in Power Dalton.”

The Bowl, the ramen-focused sister concept opened in 2024, also shared its own tribute, noting Parr’s dual role as head chef at The Joint and a central figure within The Bowl’s operations. In addition to his culinary leadership, Parr was also a beloved trivia host at The Bowl, further embedding him in the fabric of the neighborhood. “He was truly one of the most genuine, caring, funny, hardworking, and passionate people we’ve ever had the honor of calling our brother,” the restaurant wrote.

Parr stepped into the head chef role following Executive Chef Chris Ziter, who developed the original culinary direction for The Bowl after its launch. Under Parr’s leadership, both restaurants continued to evolve while maintaining their reputation as community-driven gathering places on Newport Avenue, known as much for their hospitality as their food.

Originally opened in 2011 by Mike Lowe, The Joint has long been a cornerstone of Ocean Beach’s dining and nightlife scene, pairing sushi and tapas with an extensive craft beer selection. The Bowl followed more than a decade later, opening in the former Taika Sushi space as a modern ramen and small-plates concept emphasizing seasonal ingredients, local sourcing, and neighborhood energy.

In the wake of Parr’s passing, friends, coworkers, and patrons across San Diego have begun sharing memories and condolences, underscoring how deeply his presence was felt despite his young age. Both restaurants emphasized Parr’s kindness, camaraderie, and ability to bring people together, qualities that resonated well beyond the kitchen.

A GoFundMe campaign is currently in the works to support Parr’s family and loved ones. SanDiegoVille will share additional details once the fundraiser is publicly available.

The Joint and The Bowl are located on Newport Avenue in San Diego’s Ocean Beach neighborhood. Further updates regarding services, fundraising efforts, and restaurant operations are expected in the coming days.
