The restaurant announced its return this week via social media, marking the end of a difficult rebuilding process that extended far beyond initial expectations. What was first described as a temporary closure following the small kitchen fire evolved into a much longer ordeal, as ownership worked through permitting, reconstruction, and additional complications that repeatedly delayed reopening.
In a December 2024 update shared with customers, Bahn Thai revealed that just as progress was being made, the property was hit by a break-in that caused extensive damage. According to the post, newly installed wiring and copper plumbing were stolen, forcing the restaurant to essentially redo portions of the rebuild and wait for insurance approvals, pushing the reopening timeline back once again.
Despite those challenges, the Hillcrest location is now back in operation, restoring one of the neighborhood’s more recognizable Thai dining destinations. Originally opened as a second outpost of the University Heights flagship, the Hillcrest restaurant occupies a high-traffic stretch of Fifth Avenue and had built a steady following prior to the 2023 fire.
The reopening also comes as Bahn Thai continues work on a much larger and long-anticipated relocation project just blocks away in University Heights. In late 2023, the restaurant’s ownership purchased the former Small Bar property at 4628 Park Boulevard for more than $2.3 million, with plans to transform the historic building into an expanded version of the concept. That new location, which sits near the original Bahn Thai restaurant, is expected to significantly increase capacity and modernize the dining experience while maintaining the brand’s core menu.
While the University Heights project has taken longer than initially projected, ownership is now targeting completion by the end of this year. Once finished, the new space is expected to serve as a flagship location for the brand moving forward.
Bahn Thai was first established in 2011 by Paul and Jinda Srimuang and has become a staple in San Diego’s Thai food scene, known for its traditional dishes and neighborhood-oriented atmosphere. The return of the Hillcrest location not only restores a familiar option for longtime customers but also signals that the company’s broader expansion plans remain on track despite years of unexpected obstacles.
For now, Bahn Thai fans can once again visit the Hillcrest outpost as the business continues its next chapter, balancing a long-awaited reopening with the development of a much larger future home nearby.
Bahn Thai is now open at 3766 Fifth Avenue in San Diego’s Hillcrest neighborhood. The forthcoming University Heights location at 4628 Park Boulevard is currently under construction and expected to open later this year. For more information, visit bahnthai.net.
