Downtown San Diego's largest outdoor pickleball experience is returning this summer as Gaslamp Urban Pickleball transforms a section of Fifth Avenue into a temporary pickleball village complete with courts, live entertainment, food, drinks, shopping, and social activities.
Beginning July 30, the popular event will once again take over Fifth Avenue between Island Avenue and K Street in the heart of the Gaslamp Quarter, bringing six consecutive Thursdays of pickleball action to one of the city's busiest entertainment districts.
Running every Thursday from 4pm until sunset through September 3, Gaslamp Urban Pickleball combines recreational sports with a street festival atmosphere, creating an experience designed for both serious players and first-time participants. Organizers will install eight outdoor pickleball courts directly on Fifth Avenue, allowing players to rally beneath downtown skyscrapers while surrounded by restaurants, bars, and the energy of the historic Gaslamp Quarter.
The event returns after a successful inaugural season that drew hundreds of players and spectators to downtown San Diego throughout the summer. As pickleball continues its meteoric rise as America's fastest-growing sport, organizers are expanding the experience beyond the courts with additional activations, vendors, and community programming.
Among the returning features is the Game Day Market, which will showcase local businesses, pickleball brands, wellness companies, apparel vendors, giveaways, and interactive experiences. Participants will also have access to the newly announced Zero Proof Garden, a dedicated social space featuring alcohol-free beverages, hydration stations, lounge seating, and a wellness-focused atmosphere for players looking to cool down between matches.
Live music and entertainment will accompany play throughout the event, helping create a festival-like environment that blends sport, socializing, and downtown nightlife. Organizers say all skill levels are welcome, whether participants are experienced pickleball players or trying the sport for the first time.
Registration costs $45 and includes court time, an official event T-shirt, access to the Game Day Market, exclusive Paddle Hour perks, giveaways, and opportunities to win prizes through the event's "Wheel of Serves" activation.
The event represents another effort by the Gaslamp Quarter Association to activate public spaces while showcasing downtown San Diego as a destination for recreation, entertainment, dining, and community events. By temporarily converting a portion of Fifth Avenue into a sports venue, organizers hope to create a uniquely urban pickleball experience unlike anything else currently offered in the region.
Gaslamp Urban Pickleball takes place every Thursday from July 30 through September 3 from 4pm until sunset on Fifth Avenue between Island Avenue and K Street in downtown San Diego. Registration is now open, and organizers note that participation is limited due to court capacity.
