San Diego's Le Parfait Paris Says Downtown Business Is Becoming "Impossible" After Planters Destroyed Outside Gaslamp Location By Homeless-Related Vandalism

Popular downtown San Diego bakery Le Parfait Paris is speaking out after surveillance footage captured a man destroying planters outside its flagship Gaslamp Quarter location in the early morning hours Tuesday, adding to ongoing concerns among downtown business owners about the impact of homelessness and street disorder on daily operations.

According to Le Parfait Paris, the incident occurred at approximately 5:08am on Tuesday, June 2, outside the company's original location at 555 G Street in downtown San Diego. Video shared with SanDiegoVille showa a man wrapped in a blanket systematically ripping plants from multiple sidewalk planters and scattering soil and landscaping materials across the storefront. Photos taken after the incident show uprooted flowers, overturned soil, and debris spread across the pedestrian walkway in front of the French bakery and café.
Founded by French natives Guillaume and Ludivine Ryon, Le Parfait Paris has become one of San Diego's most successful locally owned bakery brands since opening its first location in the Gaslamp Quarter in 2014. What began as a farmers market venture has expanded into a growing hospitality company with locations in Liberty Public Market, Del Mar's Sky Deck, Fashion Valley, Coronado Ferry Landing, Anaheim Packing District, and additional locations planned throughout San Diego County.

In a statement provided to SanDiegoVille, Le Parfait Paris co-founder Ludivine Ryon described the incident as both personally and professionally devastating.

"We are heartbroken by the damage done to the exterior of our Downtown San Diego patisserie," said Ryon. "Our storefront, flowers, and outdoor presentation are part of the warm Parisian experience we work so hard to create for our guests every day, and seeing that destroyed was incredibly upsetting for our team.

"We are grateful no one was injured, and we appreciate the community members and media who have helped bring attention to what happened. As a small business in Downtown San Diego, we believe this incident reflects a larger need for more support, safety, and accountability in our neighborhood, for businesses, residents, visitors, and vulnerable individuals alike.

"Our team is already working to restore the exterior, replace the damaged planters, and continue welcoming guests with the same care and hospitality Le Parfait Paris is known for. Small businesses put so much love into their neighborhoods. We are grateful to be part of this community, and we look forward to welcoming you back with flowers, pastries, and a little Parisian magic soon."

The comments reflect growing frustration among some downtown business owners who say they continue to face vandalism, property damage, trespassing, and other street-level challenges with a lack of city efforts aimed at addressing homelessness and public safety concerns throughout the downtown area.

For Le Parfait Paris, the damage represented more than the loss of a few flowers and planters. The carefully maintained storefront serves as an extension of the company's brand and its effort to recreate the atmosphere of a traditional Parisian café in the heart of San Diego.

No information has been released regarding whether a police report was filed or whether any arrests have been made in connection with the incident.

Le Parfait Paris' original flagship café remains open and operating at 555 G Street in downtown San Diego's Gaslamp Quarter. For more information, parfaitparis.com.
