A new Mexican-inspired bar, restaurant and lounge is preparing to take over one of Little Italy's most recognizable hospitality spaces. Juliette Bar & Restaurant is in development in the former home of Camino Riviera and, before that, long-running cantina El Camino. The incoming concept is being launched by a group of Mexican restaurateurs, with San Diego hospitality veteran Matt Spencer of SDCM Restaurant Group remaining involved as a small partner.
California Secretary of State records show Juliette SD, LLC was filed in May 2026, listing Bruno Perez Gonzalez, Galo Gonzalez Robles, Luis Carlos Ahuage-Arnaiz, Mathew Spencer and Diego Jose Girault as managers or members. The project also has a City of San Diego business listing under Juliette SD LLC for full-service restaurants at 2400 India Street.
While the concept is still being shaped, Diego Girault told SanDiegoVille the team is still actively finalizing the direction for the business. Spencer described Juliette as comparable in spirit to Camino Riviera: a highly designed lounge, bar and restaurant inspired by Mexican culture, with agave spirits, Mexican food and a nightlife-friendly atmosphere.
The new project follows Camino Riviera's permanent closure in September 2025. Spencer previously transformed the former El Camino space into Camino Riviera in 2021, creating a Riviera Maya-inspired indoor-outdoor restaurant and nightlife destination known for immersive design, DJs, agave cocktails and late-night energy.
According to Spencer, Camino Riviera's final chapter was complicated by ongoing complaints from a neighboring resident over music and noise, which eventually contributed to ABC restrictions and a temporary liquor license suspension tied to patio entertainment. Spencer said the closure disrupted staffing and operations, and the business never fully regained its footing.
Rather than walking away entirely from the Little Italy property, Spencer is now staying involved with Juliette as the next group attempts to revive the India Street space with a refreshed Mexican restaurant and lounge concept.
Girault, one of the partners listed in the new entity, has been associated with Coronado's long-running Chez Loma, where he helped lead operations and reposition the French restaurant following the pandemic. In prior interviews, Girault has described his role at Chez Loma as focused on restoring the restaurant's reputation, modernizing operations and elevating the guest experience.
Juliette joins a rapidly shifting Little Italy hospitality corridor, where several high-profile restaurant and bar spaces have changed hands or gone dark in recent years. The former Camino Riviera space remains one of the neighborhood's most distinctive venues, with an expansive indoor-outdoor layout and a design-forward footprint well suited for another nightlife-driven restaurant.
An opening timeline for Juliette has not yet been announced. The restaurant is expected to open at 2400 India Street in San Diego's Little Italy.
