The unusual circumstances came to public attention Monday after the man's sister posted an emotional plea to Reddit's r/sandiego community. According to the family, her brother, identified only as Christian in the post, unexpectedly flew from San Antonio to San Diego on the morning of Wednesday, September 9, despite his relatives being unaware of any plans or apparent reason for him to visit Southern California.
Christian was 40 and had served in both the U.S. Army and National Guard, his sister later explained in the discussion. She said he left most of his possessions behind in Texas and apparently traveled with very few belongings, making the sudden trip even more puzzling to his family. His last known shared phone location was at San Diego International Airport shortly after his arrival on September 9. From there, his trail effectively disappears for approximately 48 hours.
"We don't know where Christian went, where he stayed, who he spoke to, or how he traveled through San Diego," his sister wrote.
Then, on the night of Friday, September 11, Christian died following what his family describes as an incident involving a train in the Torrey Pines/Del Mar area. His sister said Christian did not have identification or his belongings with him when he was found, forcing authorities to initially identify him through fingerprints before his identity was confirmed by his family.
His phone, backpack, identification and other possessions apparently remain unaccounted for, according to the family. Those missing belongings have become another potentially important piece of the mystery as relatives attempt to determine where Christian went after arriving in San Diego and what occurred during his final two days.
The family says it is communicating with authorities investigating Christian's death, but his sister expressed frustration over the apparent lack of publicly available information surrounding the fatal incident. SanDiegoVille also could not locate a publicly issued law enforcement news release or contemporaneous local news report documenting a fatal September 11 train collision in the Torrey Pines or Del Mar area during a review of publicly searchable sources.
That absence particularly puzzled Christian's family because fatal collisions involving trains elsewhere in San Diego County are frequently reported publicly. Several Reddit users similarly attempted to locate coverage of the September 11 incident and came up empty, although the absence of a news story does not itself indicate anything unusual about the circumstances of his death.
There was, however, an unusual rail situation unfolding along San Diego's coastal corridor that same weekend. The North County Transit District announced on September 11 that all COASTER service between Oceanside and San Diego would be suspended on Saturday and Sunday, September 12-13, for previously scheduled maintenance. The shutdown did not begin until the day after Christian's reported death, and NCTD said regular service was expected to resume Monday.
Pacific Surfliner service was also being affected by track work that weekend, including changes to some service on the evening of September 11. Nothing located by SanDiegoVille currently establishes which train was involved in Christian's death, however, and the family's description of the incident should not be interpreted as identifying a particular railroad or transit agency.
The circumstances leading Christian to San Diego remain even less clear. His family does not know whether he traveled north from the airport by train, rideshare, bus, on foot or through some combination of transportation, nor has the family publicly identified anyone he may have been meeting in the region.
His military background prompted several San Diegans to wonder whether he could have been visiting someone associated with the region's enormous active-duty and veteran community. Others suggested the family investigate whether Christian visited a VA facility or had contacts stationed locally, but there is currently no evidence establishing that either occurred.
Likewise, some Reddit commenters speculated about Christian's mental health, substance use, romantic relationships or reasons for traveling to San Diego. None of those theories has been substantiated by his family or authorities, and they should not be treated as explanations for either his trip or death.
Instead, his sister's request is remarkably straightforward: she wants to find people who may have actually encountered her brother.
The family is particularly interested in hearing from anyone who worked at or passed through San Diego International Airport on September 9, rode local COASTER, Amtrak, trolley or bus services between September 9 and 11, or was around Torrey Pines, Del Mar, Sorrento Valley and nearby communities during that period. They are also hoping someone might remember seeing Christian's abandoned backpack, phone, identification or other belongings.
The Reddit appeal quickly resonated with San Diegans, receiving more than 1,600 upvotes within hours. Residents began suggesting potential avenues for reconstructing Christian's movements, including airport surveillance footage, rideshare records, financial transactions, cellular location information and footage that may exist aboard the train involved in the fatal incident.
One commenter who said her own husband was struck and killed by a train in San Diego told Christian's sister that train cameras helped her family understand what happened. She suggested asking investigators about any available onboard footage as well as eventually reviewing information contained in the Medical Examiner's report.
Christian's sister emphasized that the family does not want members of the public trespassing, attempting to access private information, harassing people or interfering with the official investigation. Rather, they are hoping someone already possesses a seemingly insignificant piece of information that could help fill the two-day hole in their brother's final journey.
For his family, the unanswered questions extend beyond determining precisely how Christian died. They want to know why he suddenly came to San Diego, where he went after walking out of the airport, how he traveled roughly 20 miles north toward the Torrey Pines and Del Mar area, who he encountered along the way and what became of the belongings he apparently had when he arrived.
"Christian wasn't just an unidentified person involved in a train incident," his sister wrote. "He was my brother. He was someone's son, brother, uncle, friend and a veteran."
Anyone who believes they encountered Christian between September 9 and September 11 or possesses legitimate information concerning his movements is being asked to contact his sister privately through the original Reddit post rather than publishing potentially sensitive information publicly.
