April 15, 2015

In its sixth year, Eat.Drink.Read. A Culinary Event for Literacy is taking new direction. Chef Brian Malarkey is opening one of his newer San Diego culinary creations, Green Acres, to Eat.Drink.Read. on Wednesday, May 13, from 5-8pm, for this delectable event focused on raising funds and awareness of the liberating effects of literacy. In addition to a new location and culinary host, the event is also offering a VIP package, granting patrons an exclusive reception with Malarkey. We have two tickets to giveaway, so read on for all the details and be sure to enter.

Eat.Drink.Read. will feature more than 15 chefs from San Diego County’s most prominent restaurants serving from more than 30 tasting stations, including offerings from Amaya at The Grand Del Mar, Croce’s Park West, Deckman’s en el Mogor, Extraordinary Desserts, Ironside Fish & Oyster, Nine-Ten, Oceana Coastal Kitchen, Sadie Rose Baking Co., Searsucker, UnderBelly, Waypoint Public and more. Each chef will create and serves a dish inspired by his or her favorite book.   Guests can also enjoy samples from local chocolatiers, bread makers, coffee roasters and other artisanal food purveyors.

The Malarkey Family
“I get so much joy reading to my children each day and watching their vocabulary blossom. I can’t imagine the challenges more than 170,000 illiterate children and adults in San Diego face each day,” said Chef Brian Malarkey. “That’s why Eat.Drink.Read. is such an important event. It’s an opportunity for San Diegans to have some fun while raising money for an organization that annually boosts and advocates literacy programming for our locales, at no cost to the family. I’m looking forward to seeing what clever creations my fellow chefs develop, and hearing more about the stories that inspire their concoctions.”

There will also be winemakers and craft breweries pairing libations to match the dishes, including tastes from Baja Wines + Food, Ballast Point Brewing & Spirits, Coronado Brewing Co., Green Flash Brewing Co., Iron Fist Brewing Co., Lightning Brewery,  URBN Brewing Co., Twisted Manzanita Ales & Spirits and many others.

“Low literacy limits nearly every aspect of a person’s potential. From the obvious things such as finding employment, to the less discussed but critical daily activities such as reading a bus schedule, following medical instructions – even reading a recipe,” said Jose Cruz, San Diego Council on Literacy CEO. “Our affiliated programs liberate tens of thousands of San Diegans by teaching them to read. Over the years, community support of Eat.Drink.Read. has become essential to the sustainability of the SDCOL mission.”

The annual fundraising event benefits 28 affiliate literacy programs in San Diego County and the SDCOL LITERACY 20/20 campaign. With one in five adults in San Diego County possessing below basic literacy skills, SDCOL has developed an aggressive plan to advance literacy rates among targeted populations in San Diego County by the year 2020.
