Tijuana Sensation Tacos El Gordo Opens New Location In Chula Vista With Downtown San Diego Outpost Next To Debut

March 13, 2018

Tacos El Gordo, which first launched in Tijuana in 1972, has opened a new San Diego location on Broadway in Chula Vista, while at the same time shuttering its H Street location for maintenance. The popular taqueria will also debut another highly-anticipated outpost in downtown San Diego later this year.

The popular taco shop chain Tacos El Gordo has unveiled its newest location at 556 Broadway in the space that last housed The Steak House on Broadway in San Diego's South County city of Chula Vista. Coinciding with the debut, the company announced that it has closed its original U.S. eatery at 689 H Street in Chula Vista for maintenance, which first opened in 1998, hoping to get it reopened in the next couple months. The Tacos El Gordo branch at 3265 Palm Avenue in Otay Mesa remains open.

Tacos El Gordo also currently has three locations in Tijuana with another three in Las Vegas, NV. We announced in May 2016 that the company had taken over the Gaslamp space formerly occupied by Starbuck's at 511 F Street with an anticipated mid-2017 opening that has been significantly delayed. The Gaslamp spot is still being constructed within the historic William Penn Building and will span 2,200 square-feet with a 900 square-foot mezzanine. Tacos El Gordo Gaslamp hopes to unveil no later than this summer.

Tacos El Gordo is a fast-casual taco shop chain that specializes in authentic Tijuana street tacos constructed with handmade corn tortillas, top grade meats and guacamole and salsas made from scratch daily. Tacos El Gordo was named as one of Yelp's Top 100 Places To Eat in the United States in 2016 (#17), 2015 (#29), and 2014 (#15).
