Skateboard Legend Tony Hawk's Chick & Hawk Restaurant Delayed Until Mid-2023 But Will Soon Host Pop-Ups Around San Diego

December 19, 2022

Skateboard legend Tony Hawk's incoming Chick & Hawk restaurant & bar has been delayed until 2023, but the highly-anticipated eatery has plans to host pop-ups around San Diego County.

Last year, we broke the news that longtime San Diego chef Andrew Bachelier had announced he would be opening a new restaurant in partnership with the most famous skateboarder in the world Tony "Birdman" Hawk. Chef Bachelier was previously integral in the launch of dining destinations Campfire and Jeune et Jolie in Carlsbad before parting ways with the company in summer 2020. Dubbed as a "fast-fine" restaurant and bar concept, Chick & Hawk was originally anticipated to open in San Diego's Encinitas community this past summer, but due to delays, the eatery is now not scheduled to unveil until mid-2023.

"Wishing Everyone a Happy Holidays," wrote Chef Andrew Bachelier in an Instagram post. "I also wanted to give all of you an update on our much-anticipated restaurant Chick & Hawk. We’ve certainly faced some challenges in getting Chick & Hawk open; But as we continue working with our team and the city we expect to open our doors this coming summer. We are so excited to finally bring Chick & Hawk to the community in 2023. So We’ll be serving up our signature sandwich 'The #Birdman' along with a few surprises. At a few of our favorite local breweries till the end of the month. Lastly, starting mid January we’ll be opening up our pop-up Cafe 'Mana' - a modern day atelier, located right on the 101 in Leucadia."
Chick & Hawk is currently under construction in the 1,421 square-foot space that long housed Fulano's Restaurant in the Leucadia area of Encinitas. Local design firm Starch Creative Studios is spearheading the renovation with the final product set to offer indoor and outdoor dining with a design inspired by 90s surf and skateboard culture combined with a chicken motif. The incoming restaurant will integrate facets of fast-casual and fine-dining, offering an unpretentious menu centered around elevated fried chicken sandwiches made with locally sourced poultry, as well as oysters, seafood, and approachable versions of Bachelier's globally-driven Southern California cuisine. There will also be a full bar with craft beer, wine and cocktails.

Chick & Hawk's holiday pop-up tour includes stops at South O Brewing in Oceanside on December 22, Harland Brewing in Scripps Ranch on December 23, Frankie's in Oceanside on December 29, and Black Plague Brewing in Oceanside on December 30. There is no word whether Tony Hawk will be making an appearance at any of the locations.

With the impending opening of Chick & Hawk, San Diego native Tony Hawk is expanding his growing restaurant portfolio. In 2019, the iconic skateboarder teamed up with Playboy Playmate Nicole Dahm Kelly (one of the famous Dahm Triplets) to open GuacAmigos Mexican restaurant on Coast Highway in Newport Beach, CA. Nicole Dahm Kelly previously operated Lucky Bastard Saloon in San Diego's Gaslamp from 2013 until the bar shuttered in 2016.

Chick & Hawk is expected to open in summer 2023 at 145 Leucadia Boulevard in San Diego's North County city of Encinitas. For more information, visit chickandhawk.com and follow the concept on Instagram for updates.
