Oceanside Pier Restaurant Catches Fire In San Diego's North County

April 25, 2024

Massive smoke plumes were seen today as the former Ruby's Diner and Brine Box space caught fire at the end of the Oceanside Pier in San Diego's North County.

In a tragic turn of events today, the restaurant building at the end of the Oceanside Pier caught fire, engulfing the historic structure in flames and sending plumes of smoke billowing into the sky. The fire, which broke out at approximately 3pm Thursday, likely will result in significant damage to the iconic pier landmark. It is believed the fire started underneath the pier or within the restaurant and everyone made it off safely.

The Oceanside Pier, a cherished symbol of the coastal community's rich history and vibrant culture, has long been a source of pride for residents and visitors alike. Stretching 1,954 feet into the Pacific Ocean, the pier stands as one of the longest wooden piers on the West Coast and has played a central role in the city's development and identity.
Constructed in 1888, the Oceanside Pier has weathered numerous storms, renovations, and changes over its more than a century-long history. Originally built to serve as a wharf for steamships and to facilitate the shipping of goods, the pier quickly evolved into a recreational hub, attracting fishermen, tourists, and locals seeking leisure and relaxation by the sea.
Over the years, the pier has witnessed countless memorable moments, from romantic sunset strolls to family outings and community events. Its iconic silhouette against the backdrop of the ocean has been immortalized in photographs, paintings, and the hearts of those who have walked its weathered planks.
At the end of the pier stood the building occupied by Ruby's Diner for nearly 30 years from 1982 until the restaurant closed in early 2021. A section of the building also houses Brine Box, a quaint seafood eatery from the owners of nearby restaurants Wrench & Rodent Seabastopub and The Plot vegan restaurant.
Today's devastating fire has left the community in shock. At the time of publishing this article, firefighters and U.S. Coast Guard members continue to battle bravely to contain the blaze and prevent further damage to surrounding structures. As the smoke clears and the extent of the damage is assessed, the future of the restaurant and the pier itself remains uncertain. The investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
