A flourishing Filipino chain that already opened and closed a location in San Diego is returning to America's Finest City. Famous Waffle Sandwich, known abroad as Famous Belgian Waffles, will launch its only United States location in Kearny Mesa later this year.
Founded as a simple kiosk in the Philippines in September 2012 by entrepreneur Euclid Cezar, Famous Belgian Waffles now claims to have 600 locations around Southeast Asia, most located in Filipino malls. The first U.S. branch opened in Westfield North County in Escondido in November 2017 but shuttered less than a year later.
Famous Waffle Sandwich will open by this fall in a space that last housed a vape shop within a retail plaza off Convoy Street in Kearny Mesa, with the franchisee aiming to expand the concept in San Diego County. The eatery will serve a menu of fresh-made Belgian waffle sandwiches, including sweet and savory options. Highlights include the Hawaiian Ham & Cheese, Chicken & Waffles, Pizza, Chocolate Peanut Butter, and Smore's.
