Karl Strauss Brewing Company Closes La Jolla Restaurant After Nearly 25 Years In Business

January 11, 2021

After nearly 25 years in business, Karl Strauss Brewing Company has announced the permanent closure of its La Jolla brewpub and restaurant.

"We have some bittersweet news to share - we have closed our La Jolla brewpub," read the announcement on Karl Strauss Brewing Company's website. "Our lease has expired and the difficult decision was made not to renew it. The support we’ve gotten from you during the pandemic has been incredible. For that, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts. But don’t fret! When you’re looking to enjoy our award-winning beer and food, our Sorrento Mesa (Brewery Gardens) and 4S Ranch brewpubs are still just down the road. Both of these locations are currently open for to-go orders, and we’re hopeful our outdoor patios will be back open in the upcoming weeks."

Karl Strauss was a former vice president of production at Pabst Brewing Company before launching his namesake brewery in 1989. Since helping start the city’s craft beer scene, Karl Strauss Brewing Company has opened nearly a dozen locations in Southern California, including in Carlsbad, Downtown San Diego, Sorrento Mesa, 4S Ranch, Temecula, Los Angeles, Costa Mesa, Anaheim and its main brewery on the outskirts of Pacific Beach. The La Jolla restaurant first opened in 1996 and was the company second brewery restaurant at the time.
