Comedor Nishi Bringing Japanese-Mexican Breakfast & Lunch Ready To Unveil In Former Coffee Cup Space In La Jolla Village

August 8, 2024

The founders of The Taco Stand restaurants are ready to unveil Comedor Nishi, a Japanese/Mexican-inspired breakfast and lunch eatery opening in the space long-occupied by Coffee Cup café in La Jolla.

Shōwa Hospitality is a San Diego-based restaurant collective founded by Julian Hakim Baloyan and Aram Baloyan that operates such local eateries as The Taco Stand, Himitsu in La Jolla, Shōwa Ramen on the UCSD campus, Convoy Music Bar, and many other outside San Diego. Earlier this year, the company took over the quaint unit on Wall Street in La Jolla that housed Coffee Cup restaurant since 1998.
Dubbed Comedor Nishi, which is a combination of the Spanish word for "dining hall" and the Japanese word for "west", Shōwa Hospitality's newest eatery will unveil on August 10. Expect an elevated take Mexico-meets-Japan breakfast and lunch dishes from Chef Pancho Ibáñez, who spent a half-decade working for Mexico City's two-Michelin-starred Pujul restaurant.
Comedor Nishi's menu will offer items ranging from sweet and savory morning-focused creations to exciting lunch options like torta sandwiches, tacos, burritos and salads. The restaurant will also sell beer, wine, Micheladas and mimosas. Expect dishes like chilaquiles, huevos rancheros, a cochinita pibil torta, duck carnitas, an open-faced bean & cheese sandwich, Mexican conchas, seasonal pies, and more. Comedor Nishi will launch dinner service at some point in early 2025.
Comedor Nishi will grand open on Saturday, August 10, at 1109 Wall Street in San Diego's La Jolla. For more information, visit showahospitality.com and check out the menu below.
