Beginning Sunday, June 8, Blick will operate out of a new space at 3633 Midway Drive, the former Joann Fabric and Craft Store in Point Loma. This interim location ensures minimal disruption for artists and students who rely on the retailer for professional-grade supplies while Blick continues to work on its permanent relocation to North Park. The North Park site - previously announced at 3974 30th Street, between Bivouac and Leila restaurants - remains part of the company’s long-term plan, although an opening date for that location is still to be determined.
Blick's closure after end of business on Saturday, June 7, is prompted by the impending demolition of its current 10,000-square-foot store at 1844 India Street to make way for a high-rise, mixed-use development. The 27-story tower project, dubbed APRÉS Little Italy, which includes 153 residential units and over 9,000 square feet of commercial space, reflects the rapid urbanization of Little Italy and has forced long-standing businesses like Blick to relocate.
The India Street store has deep roots in the San Diego art scene, beginning as HG Daniels in the mid-20th century before becoming The Art Store and eventually Dick Blick Art Materials in the early 2000s. Over the years, it became a trusted hub for artists, educators, and hobbyists alike, offering everything from canvases and brushes to rare inks and professional drafting tools.
Though its departure from Little Italy marks the end of a significant chapter, Blick’s upcoming move signals a continued commitment to San Diego’s arts community. The Point Loma location will serve customers during the transition, while the eventual North Park storefront positions the brand within a neighborhood increasingly known for its cultural and artistic vitality.
