The Social Study Brings Science, Storytelling, And Sold-Out Talks To San Diego

What if your next happy hour came with a lecture on AI, resilience, or even microplastics - taught by a world-class expert who knows how to work a room? That's the premise behind The Social Study, a rapidly growing San Diego-based speaker series that's turning science, culture, and career advice into hot-ticket entertainment.

Founded by local entrepreneur Eric Gagnon, who was inspired by a similar concept in New York, The Social Study pairs academic and industry experts with intimate bar and brewery settings to create talks that feel more like lively conversations than classroom lectures. And San Diegans are taking notice. The series regularly sells out, with attendees eager to sip a cocktail while learning about everything from climate science to corporate empathy.

"I’ve always wanted to build something of my own,” says the founder, who started cold-emailing venues and speakers before the concept took off. “I love bringing people together and learning new things. This felt like the perfect fit.”

The talks aren’t your average PowerPoint presentations. Instead, The Social Study spotlights charismatic professors, scientists, authors, and brand strategists - people who can make complex ideas feel personal, urgent, and even funny. "One of the first things I ask a potential speaker is: What do people always ask you at parties?", the founder says. "If they can light up a room with their answer, they’re probably right for us."

Past speakers have included Jules Jaffe, a researcher who helped develop the imaging system that discovered the Titanic, and upcoming events continue the high bar. On August 13 in North Park, culture strategist Reed Maltbie will unpack the philosophy behind No Dickheads: Guiding Principles from History’s Top Sports Teams. Talks later this month will tackle nonprofit leadership, microplastics, and the intersection of climate stress and agriculture.

Despite the academic credentials of its speakers, the atmosphere is anything but stiff. Venues are typically cozy, drinks are flowing, and conversations linger long after the hour-long lectures wrap. That's by design. "We’ve been intentional about the vibe and the experience," says the founder. "We want it to feel curious and intimate, not corporate."

Now, The Social Study is looking to grow. The team has recently expanded into North County and launched a speaker interest form and venue submission portal to meet rising demand. They’ve also introduced a "vote for your city”"feature, allowing fans from across the U.S. - and even abroad - to help chart the next chapters of the series.

As it grows, The Social Study is staying focused on what makes it work: authenticity, quality, and a genuine love of learning. "This year is all about scaling without losing the magic," the founder says.

To get involved, San Diegans can follow The Social Study on Instagram or sign up for the newsletter to get first dibs on new events. Tickets go live every Sunday and typically sell out quickly. Those interested in speaking can apply online, though the bar is high - storytelling chops required.

Whether it’s neuroscience or niche mythology, if it’s fascinating and well-told, chances are it’ll end up on The Social Study’s stage. And in San Diego, that stage is just as likely to be a brewery patio as a lecture hall.
