La Corriente Mexican Seafood Opens In Coronado, Bringing Upscale Baja Mariscos To Orange Avenue

La Corriente Cocina del Pacífico, the acclaimed Mexican seafood restaurant group that made waves in La Jolla last year, has officially opened its second San Diego location - this time in the heart of Coronado.

Founded in Tijuana in 2014 as La Corriente Cevichería + Nais, the brand has since expanded across Mexico with locations in Mexicali, Monterrey, Mazatlán, and Mexico City, gaining a reputation for its refined yet approachable approach to coastal cuisine. Its first U.S. location opened in La Jolla in early 2024, drawing crowds for its fresh seafood, creative cocktails, and elegant presentation.

The new outpost debuted this week, occupying the ground floor of the historic Coronado Historical Association Museum building in the space that formerly housed L’Orangerie French restaurant. The Coronado location continues that tradition in a bright, sophisticated setting that mirrors the polished coastal charm of its surroundings.

The restaurant’s sunny outdoor patio, lined with scalloped white umbrellas and lush greenery, provides an inviting spot to enjoy the brand’s signature mariscos with a view of palm trees and sea breezes. Inside, guests are greeted by a sleek, curved bar, tropical plants, and warm wood finishes that strike a balance between upscale dining and Baja relaxation.

The menu, centered on seafood from the Pacific coast, features La Corriente’s greatest hits - like the “Red Snapper Tostada,” a thinly sliced raw fish preparation layered with red onion, avocado, and aioli, and the “La Corriente Ceviche” with shrimp, octopus, and tuna in a bright citrus dressing. Other highlights include the Bluefin Roll, soft-shell crab tacos, and Zarandeado-style octopus, grilled over wood fire with potatoes and red rice.

An extensive raw bar offers ceviches, aguachiles, and oysters by the half-dozen, while heartier entrées include the “Sayulita Butterfly Fish” and “Esmeralda” branzino fillet with capers, arugula, and olive oil. Beverages feature a mix of coastal-inspired cocktails, from the Cucumber Mezcalita and Serrano Margarita to inventive takes on micheladas and Bloody Marys made with Clamato, shrimp, and Tajín.

Co-founders Diego González and Karim Reza have emphasized that La Corriente’s expansion into the U.S. is about maintaining the same standards of freshness, presentation, and hospitality that defined their original Tijuana location. “We want to bring the same experience we’ve built in Mexico—seafood that’s bold, authentic, and full of life,” González previously said.

With its Coronado debut, La Corriente now brings the vibrant flavors of Baja California to one of San Diego County’s most iconic coastal destinations, continuing the restaurant group’s mission of blending modern design with traditional Pacific cuisine.

La Corriente Cocina del Pacífico is now open at 1100 Orange Avenue, Coronado, CA 92118. For more information, visit grupolacorriente.com.
