Less than a month after finally opening its long-awaited North County San Diego location following years of delays, Black Bear Diner has been ordered closed by county health officials.
According to inspection records from the County of San Diego Department of Environmental Health and Quality, the Vista location of the Northern California-based comfort food chain was ordered closed on Tuesday, June 23 following a routine inspection that identified a major sewage disposal violation along with numerous additional sanitation and operational deficiencies. The closure comes just 28 days after the restaurant officially opened on May 26 at the former Coco's Bakery location on West Vista Way, ending a prolonged development process that had stretched on for nearly two years and generated significant anticipation among North County residents.
County inspectors classified the sewage disposal issue as a major violation, a category that can trigger immediate closure when conditions are determined to pose a potential risk to public health. Inspection records show officials also cited the restaurant for a lengthy list of additional violations, including out-of-compliance conditions involving fruit and vegetable washing procedures, storage of toxic substances, equipment and utensil storage, wiping cloths, plumbing, garbage handling, toilet facilities, cleaning and personal item storage, and facility maintenance involving floors, walls, and ceilings.
Inspectors additionally documented minor violations involving proper handwashing facilities and holding temperatures. The inspection report did not immediately provide detailed descriptions of the specific conditions that led to each violation, but county records indicate the restaurant was ordered closed as a result of the findings.
The closure represents an inauspicious start for a restaurant that many North County residents had eagerly awaited. As SanDiegoVille previously reported, the Vista location experienced multiple construction delays tied to permitting, financing, and development issues before finally opening its doors last month. The restaurant occupies the former Coco's Bakery building at 605 West Vista Way and became only the second Black Bear Diner location in San Diego County.
The setback also comes as Black Bear Diner's San Diego County operations continue to face scrutiny from health inspectors. Earlier this year, the chain's El Cajon location was temporarily ordered closed following a routine inspection that uncovered a major vermin violation and other sanitation-related issues. County records show that location was also forced to close in November 2024 due to a major sewage disposal violation. While temporary restaurant closures are not uncommon in San Diego County, it is unusual for a newly opened restaurant to be shut down less than one month after beginning operations.
Founded in Mount Shasta, California, in 1995, Black Bear Diner has grown into a national chain with more than 150 locations across 14 states. The restaurants are known for their oversized portions, rustic lodge-themed interiors, breakfast platters, comfort food offerings, and carved bear statues that greet guests outside many locations.
The Vista restaurant had been viewed as a significant addition to North County's dining scene, particularly as large-format family diners have become increasingly scarce throughout the region amid restaurant closures, redevelopment projects, and changing consumer habits.
A routine inspection conducted on May 22 resulted in a score of 99 and an "A" grade despite a plumbing-related violation that inspectors determined required correction. County records indicate the restaurant had passed the subsequent reinspection on May 26 with no violations noted.
It remains unclear when the Vista location will be permitted to reopen. Under county regulations, restaurants ordered closed due to major violations must correct all conditions identified by inspectors and pass a follow-up inspection before resuming operations.
