Rather than simply opening another brewery taproom, husband-and-wife owners James and Doris Hess envision Feral Libations as a destination where guests can discover something different with every visit.
"We wanted to create a place that celebrates craft in every form - exceptional beer, thoughtful cocktails, approachable food, and genuine hospitality," the owners told SanDiegoVille. "The goal is to build a neighborhood gathering place where people can discover something new every time they visit, whether that's an independent brewery they've never heard of, a beautifully balanced cocktail, or a memorable meal."
While beer remains central to the concept, Feral Libations will expand well beyond the traditional brewery model. The venue will operate as a craft beer bar, cocktail bar and full-service restaurant, featuring Relentless' own beers alongside a large rotating selection of guest breweries from around the country. The cocktail program will receive equal attention, emphasizing original recipes, quality ingredients and classic techniques.
Food will also play a larger role than at a typical tasting room. The menu will draw inspiration from Relentless' Eagle Rock location in Los Angeles and focus on elevated yet approachable bar food, complemented by rotating chef specials.
"Our goal is to create a complete food and beverage experience that appeals to both beer enthusiasts and cocktail lovers," the owners said.
Although Relentless recently applied for California Alcoholic Beverage Control licenses that include distillery privileges, the company says beverage production will not be the primary focus of the East Village location. Instead, Feral Libations is intended to showcase the creativity and quality that have defined the Relentless brand while broadening the experience beyond beer alone.
Founded by James and Doris Hess, Relentless Brewing began in Temecula before expanding into Los Angeles with Relentless Brewing & Spirits in Eagle Rock. That location has developed a loyal following for its combination of craft beer, inventive cocktails, chef-driven food and community-focused events. The San Diego concept is designed to complement, not replace, that identity.
"Relentless is built around the brewery experience and our own beers," the owners explained. "Feral Libations expands that vision by creating a destination centered on discovery - bringing together outstanding craft beer from around the country, an ambitious cocktail program and a stronger culinary focus. It's a different experience while still reflecting the same commitment to quality and hospitality that defines Relentless."
The team said East Village was a natural fit for the project.
"East Village is one of San Diego's most exciting neighborhoods. It's constantly evolving, filled with locals, visitors, sports fans and people who appreciate great food and drinks. The former WestBrew space already had the bones for what we envisioned, and we saw an opportunity to create something that feels unique to the neighborhood while building on the energy that's already there."
The address has become something of a revolving door in San Diego's craft beer scene. Vista-based WestBrew opened the location in early 2022, just one block from Petco Park, but closed the restaurant in 2024 as part of a broader restructuring that saw the company retreat from several hospitality operations amid rising operating costs.
Feral Libations will now give the prominent corner another chance at life with a concept aimed at a much broader audience than a traditional brewery taproom. Relentless is currently targeting an April 2027 opening, though the owners say they are pushing to welcome guests even sooner.
Feral Libations is planned for 701 Island Avenue in downtown San Diego's East Village. For more information, visit relentlessbrewingandspirits.com.
