Tacos & Jarros Brings Three Generations Of Mexican Restaurant Heritage To La Jolla Village

A new family-run Mexican restaurant with roots stretching back more than fifty years in San Diego is preparing to open this summer in the heart of La Jolla Village.

Tacos & Jarros, a new concept from the family behind Cotija's Taco Shop and Cazadores Mexican Grill, is expected to debut in late August at 1109 Wall Street, taking over the highly visible corner space that most recently housed Comedor Nishi and, for nearly three decades before that, the beloved Coffee Cup Café. While the location has seen restaurants come and go in recent years, the family behind Tacos & Jarros is hoping its deep San Diego roots and multi-generational restaurant experience will provide a foundation for long-term success.

The project represents the latest chapter in a local restaurant legacy that dates back more than half a century. The Barragán family traces its San Diego restaurant heritage to 1974, when Maria Barragán's father founded the original Cotija's Cocina in Point Loma. Over the decades, the family expanded throughout the county with various Cotija's locations and later launched Cazadores Mexican Grill, which debuted in Santee in 2008 under the next generation of ownership. Now, a third generation of the family is stepping forward with a concept designed specifically for today's dining landscape.

According to the family, Tacos & Jarros will blend traditional Mexican flavors with a more contemporary and approachable format aimed at serving both locals and visitors. The name references the Mexican tradition of serving beverages in clay jugs known as "jarros," while the menu will focus on tacos, small plates, beer, wine, brunch dishes, coffee, and other offerings designed to transition throughout the day.

The restaurant will serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with morning offerings including Mexican favorites such as chilaquiles alongside more familiar brunch items like French toast reimagined through a Mexican culinary lens. Lunch and dinner will center on tacos and shareable dishes intended to provide a casual yet elevated dining experience.

"We hope that it's something that everyone can enjoy in La Jolla," said Ariana Barragán, who will operate the restaurant alongside her siblings. "We're family-oriented and want to create something welcoming for both residents and visitors."

The family says they were inspired to incorporate breakfast service after learning how fondly many La Jolla residents remembered the property's decades-long run as Coffee Cup Café, which operated at the address until closing in 2023. More recently, the space became home to Comedor Nishi, a Japanese-Mexican brunch concept from the team behind The Taco Stand that operated for just over a year before shuttering.

The location remains one of the most recognizable restaurant spaces in La Jolla Village. Situated just blocks from the coastline, the compact storefront has historically attracted a steady mix of neighborhood regulars, office workers, tourists, and beachgoers.

Tacos & Jarros also arrives at a time when La Jolla's dining scene continues to evolve. While the community is home to several upscale restaurants and chef-driven concepts, the Barragán family sees an opportunity to offer something more approachable without sacrificing quality.

For a family that has spent decades serving San Diego diners, the move into La Jolla represents both an expansion and a continuation of a longstanding tradition.

"Before Tacos & Jarros, there was Cotija's," the company recently shared on social media. "Today, Tacos & Jarros represents the next chapter: a new concept created by the third generation, built on decades of family recipes, community, and a love for great Mexican food."
