FIRST LOOK: Telefèric Barcelona Officially Opens At Westfield UTC, Bringing Award-Winning Spanish Tapas And Paella To San Diego

One of the year's most anticipated restaurant debuts has officially arrived in San Diego. After months of construction, family-owned Spanish restaurant Telefèric Barcelona has begun its soft opening at Westfield UTC in La Jolla.

Located within Westfield UTC's new luxury expansion, Telefèric Barcelona marks the acclaimed restaurant group's first San Diego location and continues the mall's transformation into one of Southern California's premier dining destinations.
Founded by the Padrosa family, Telefèric Barcelona traces its roots to Sant Cugat del Vallès, just outside Barcelona, Spain. The family opened its first American restaurant in Walnut Creek a decade ago and has since expanded throughout California and Arizona while maintaining a focus on authentic Spanish cuisine, vibrant hospitality, and the communal dining traditions that define Mediterranean culture.

Named after Barcelona's iconic cable car system, Telefèric specializes in traditional tapas, pintxos, handcrafted paellas, Spanish wines, sangrias, and creative cocktails served in a lively, contemporary setting inspired by coastal Catalonia.
The new La Jolla restaurant spans more than 5,500 square feet and seats approximately 150 guests indoors, along with 60 patio seats and a 16-seat bar. Designed by co-owner Maria Padrosa, the space incorporates imported Spanish materials, handcrafted tile, warm wood finishes, and Mediterranean-inspired architecture intended to evoke the feeling of dining along the streets of Barcelona.

The menu features many of the dishes that have helped establish the brand's reputation throughout California. Guests can begin with classic tapas like Patatas Bravas topped with spicy brava sauce and aioli, Jamón Ibérico de Bellota aged for 38 months, Gambas al Ajillo, Pulpo Telefèric with potato cream and pimentón XO, Crab Croquetas finished with tuna sashimi, Tuna Tacos, Spanish Albóndigas, and Wagyu Empanadas.
Paella remains the centerpiece of the experience, with several varieties prepared to order and designed for sharing. Options include the signature Lobster Paella with lobster, shrimp and octopus; the popular Paella Mixta with pork belly, chicken and shrimp; the squid ink Paella Negra with scallops and clams; the Ibérico Paella; and a seasonal vegetable version.

Larger entrées include a 20-ounce Wagyu Ribeye Chuletón grilled Asador-style, Prime Wellington with braised short rib and Iberian ham, grilled salmon, and piri-piri chicken kebabs. Dessert offerings include traditional Barcelona-style churros served with chocolate and toffee, Catalan-style torrija, orange mousse mochi, and a trio dessert sampler.
Complementing the food is an extensive beverage program featuring more than 100 Spanish wines, classic sangrias, gin and tonics, and Spanish-inspired craft cocktails.

Telefèric Barcelona also offers curated family-style tasting experiences for larger groups, allowing diners to sample multiple tapas alongside signature paellas and desserts.

The opening further strengthens Westfield UTC's growing collection of destination restaurants. Over the past year alone, the shopping center has welcomed Canada's upscale casual restaurant JOEY, Japan's Katsuya Ko, and now Telefèric Barcelona as part of a nearly 70,000-square-foot luxury expansion that also introduced numerous high-end fashion retailers, enhanced public spaces, additional underground parking, and new landscaping.
Rather than simply functioning as a shopping mall, Westfield UTC has increasingly positioned itself as one of San Diego's leading lifestyle destinations where dining has become as much of an attraction as retail.

Telefèric Barcelona's arrival also expands San Diego's relatively small selection of restaurants specializing in authentic Spanish cuisine, joining longtime local favorites while introducing the Padrosa family's distinctive interpretation of Catalan hospitality to the region.
Telefèric Barcelona is currently in its soft opening phase after welcoming its first guests beginning July 1. The restaurant's official grand opening is scheduled for July 9.

Telefèric Barcelona is located at Westfield UTC, 4301 La Jolla Village Drive, Suite 2030, in San Diego's University City neighborhood. For more information, visit telefericbarcelona.com/lajolla.
