Viral Video Shows San Diego Street Performer Joe Dreamz Repeatedly Attacked During Pacific Beach Half Marathon

A disturbing video showing well known San Diego street performer Joe Dreamz being repeatedly targeted by a shirtless man while performing alongside Sunday's Pacific Beach Half Marathon has exploded across social media, racking up more than 400,000 views within hours as Dreamz remarkably continues singing through the confrontation.

The incident unfolded Sunday morning, October 4, during the Pacific Beach Half Marathon, an annual race that begins at Crown Point Park, winds along Mission Bay and Mission Beach, and finishes at Thomas Avenue and Ocean Boulevard in Pacific Beach. The 2026 race began at 6:30am and was part of a two day race weekend that included Saturday's Pacific Beach 5K.

Video posted online shows Dreamz performing from atop his large portable speaker alongside the race route as runners stream past him. A hand trolley is positioned beneath or against the speaker while Dreamz, dressed in one of his signature colorful outfits, performs for passing runners.

Suddenly, a shirtless man wearing black board shorts and flip flops runs toward Dreamz and appears to yank the trolley supporting his setup, sending the performer tumbling from atop the speaker. Another man who appears to be working the event catches Dreamz as he falls, helping prevent what could have been a far more serious impact. Yet Dreamz barely misses a beat.

"Raise your hands if you're living Joe Dreamz!" he continues as he lands back on his feet, microphone still in hand and runners continuing past the bizarre scene.

But the confrontation isn't over. The shirtless man returns and appears to interfere with Dreamz's equipment a second time. He can then be heard shouting, "Get the fuck out of here, motherfucker," while Dreamz continues performing rather than physically engaging with him.

The situation escalates further when the man returns yet again and throws the hand trolley in the direction of Dreamz's recording setup, apparently striking or attempting to strike the camera Dreamz had positioned to film his performance. The man then approaches Dreamz directly and can be heard threatening him.

"I'm gonna fuck your ass up, dude," he says in the video.
Another man eventually intervenes and directs the apparent aggressor away from Dreamz. The footage later shows two San Diego Police Department officers approaching Dreamz, who tells them that he was assaulted and indicates that the man involved had gone into a nearby trailer. Toward the end of the video, officers appear to be speaking with someone in the area where Dreamz directed them.

SanDiegoVille has not independently confirmed the identity of the shirtless man, whether he was affiliated with the race or surrounding event, whether he was detained or cited, or what precipitated the confrontation. We have reached out to Dreamz for additional information but had not received a response as of publication.

The video had already amassed more than 400,000 views by the time this article was published.

Dreamz, whose real name is Joseph Harrison, has become one of San Diego's most recognizable street performers, known for popping up outside Padres games, concerts, farmers markets, marathons and other major events while asking passersby a deceptively simple question: "Are you living Joe Dreamz?"

His unusual path from struggling young worker to ubiquitous San Diego personality was profiled by San Diego Magazine just weeks before Sunday's confrontation. Dreamz told the publication that after losing his life insurance job and having his car break down during a 2020 road trip in Seattle, he used his emergency savings to buy a microphone and speaker rather than repair the vehicle. He began asking strangers about their dreams and creating $5 freestyle raps about their aspirations.

Dreamz eventually returned to San Diego and began performing everywhere from the Mission Beach boardwalk and Kate Sessions Park to the Gaslamp Quarter, Padres games, farmers markets and road races. His current website describes him as a San Diego based rapper, singer, inspirational speaker, fashion designer and podcast host.

His presence at Sunday's half marathon was hardly unusual. San Diego Magazine's recent profile actually opened with the writer recalling first encountering Dreamz standing on top of a speaker and performing for runners during the 2023 Carlsbad Half Marathon.

Dreamz has also developed a reputation for continuing to perform through confrontations. CBS 8 profiled him in 2023 after videos circulated showing people confronting, insulting and threatening the performer. In one incident following a Padres playoff victory over the New York Mets, Dreamz was shoved by a Mets fan while performing in New York but did not retaliate.

That same year, Dreamz became embroiled in a much more complicated dispute with management of the Little Italy Mercato Farmers Market over the volume of his performances. The market manager ultimately obtained a temporary restraining order after saying online videos of their encounters resulted in harassment and threats against her and her family.

Dreamz acknowledged at the time that his performances had sometimes been too loud, condemned the threats against the management and said he wanted the dispute resolved peacefully. The restraining order was ultimately dropped, and the two later made peace.

Sunday's confrontation appears markedly different based on the video posted by Dreamz. Whatever disagreement may have preceded the recorded encounter, the footage shows Dreamz continuing his performance as the man repeatedly returns, interferes with his equipment and eventually makes an explicit threat. The circumstances surrounding the incident remain unclear, including what happened after SDPD officers arrived.

The Pacific Beach Half Marathon itself is a large permitted event organized by San Diego Running Co. Sunday's 13.1 mile race traveled from Crown Point through Mission Bay and Mission Beach before reaching its beachfront finish in Pacific Beach. City records list the permitted event from 6am to 10am Sunday.

SanDiegoVille has contacted Joe Dreamz seeking his account of the confrontation and information about any injuries, damage to his equipment and interaction with police. This article will be updated if additional information becomes available.
