Cross Street Chicken & Beer Will Bring Korean Fried Chicken To San Diego's Convoy District

June 14, 2017

It was only a few months ago that we announced the opening of Your Story bar & restaurant at 4403 Convoy Street in San Diego's Kearny Mesa, but we have received word that the eatery has been sold to a longtime Convoy restaurant insider and will become Cross Street Chicken & Beer - a drinking-forward establishment specializing in the Korean after-work favorite combination of draft beer served with various fried chicken dishes and snacks.

After a short "soft opening," Your Story owner Kan Sritong decided to sell his businesses, including the 2 locations of dessert eatery and bakery Up2You Cafe in San Diego's Kearny Mesa & Linda Vista, to husband-and-wife partners Tommy Nguyen & Grace Chi. Chi was raised within the Convoy District restaurant industry, as her parents opened one of San Diego's first Korean restaurants - Arirang House - in the city. Today her father owns Grandma Tofu & Korean BBQ, her sister owns Bing Haus, her mother owns Friend's House Korean, and her grandmother and uncles own Dduriba - all located within a stone's throw of Cross Street. Also part of the project is Cross Street's General Manager Wilson To, who previously worked with Crab Hut for 10 years and helped to open the downtown and Mira Mesa locations.

Cross Street will be a modernized version of a Korean "Chimaek" eatery. Now engrained in the culture of Korea, Chimaek is a portmanteau of the word chicken combined with Maekju - the native word for beer - and this style of restaurant has been booming in popularity in South Korea and China. At chimaek restaurants, draft beer and fried chicken dishes are usually paired and ordered as a single menu item along with other anju - salty drinking snacks.

At Cross Street, expect to see a variety of chicken dishes on the menu, including fried chicken with flavors varying from soy-garlic, garlic parmesan, thai chili, original and salt 'n pepper. For appetizer dishes, expect items such as fried gizzard, kimchi fried rice with corn cheese, chicken waffle on a stick, blood sausage, and a Korean style "lunchbox" (mix of rice, spam, kimchi, egg and seaweed that you shake up before eating). The eatery will also offer fruit soju, ice cream soju, soju cocktails, and sake & wine, as well as a selection of 4 weekly changing taps that will include Korean varieties and local brews.

Cross Street will maintain the refined ambiance of the previous Your Story concept, including a revitalized outdoor dog-friendly patio facing Convoy Street. To balance the fried food, the design will be focused heavily on fresh greens, including hanging plants, turf in the patio and hedge walls to offer a modern yet cozy feel. There will also be a mural where customers can take fun photos, and weekly events and theme nights that will include game nights, Thirsty Thursdays, Funky Fridays and more.

Cross Street is anticipated to open by this August. For more information, visit Cross Street Chicken & Beer on Facebook
