Hump Day Stimulation: Guava Beach Trivia Wednesdays

May 8, 2012

If the ho-hum of the work week has you down and you are looking for some hump day stimulation for the brain, grab your smarty pants friends and head on over to Guava Beach Bar & Grill for Trivia Wednesdays, hosted by Americas Finest Trivia. Guava Beach provides a fun, chilled out atmosphere right in the middle of Mission Beach (3714 Mission Blvd.) Trivia usually gets started around 8pm but I would suggest getting there early to claim prime seating.
Teams can have up to five people and competition is tough so you should choose that team wisely. It’s helpful to have a team with a breadth of (random) knowledge to make sure all of the bases are covered. Having a female on the team also helps, as one of the rounds is heavy on celebrity recognition.

My team consists of two lawyers, a music obsessed news reporter, a world traveler and a pop culture princess stuck in an engineer’s body. We are pretty good and usually place in the top 3 so we are up for the challenge of more teams. There is always a good mix of teams from the weekly regulars and long term champs, F.Y.C (if you attend you can find out what is behind this acronym), to the random walk-ins that get wrangled into the beer induced brain fest. The team names are always highly entertaining as well.

The Loco Coconut Chicken Sandwich
Guava Beach has a great special during trivia and offers a wide variety of $3 beers from 7pm-close to help get the knowledge flowing. A $10 beer and sandwich combo is also available for hungry trivia players. Their food is really tasty and I have always been more than pleased by the menu options. My team has tried pretty much the whole menu. My personal favorites are the Coconut Chicken sandwich topped with a mango salsa and the Chipotle Chicken wrap. As for side options, their pasta salad is generously served up and some of the best I’ve ever had.

The drink menu is killer. Guava Beach is home to the Bionic Beaver, a pitcher filled with about every type of alcohol imaginable; a great way to celebrate your victory. The host, Dylan Schuck, is hilarious and really tries to challenge the teams with a mix of pop culture, world travels, politics, sports, current events, and everything in between. Prizes are generous starting from free shots to all teams that get the bonus question correct each round to the 1st place: $40 certificate, 2nd place: $20 off your tab, and 3rd place: a round of free shots.

Hump day just got a lot more exciting. See you there!
