There will soon be a new kid on the block in Hillcrest. Located on University Avenue in the heart of Hillcrest, a refreshingly new experience is set to come about later this summer in the opening of Uptown Tavern.
Taking full advantage of San Diego’s biggest attraction, the beautiful Southern California weather, Uptown Tavern will offer an airy, open floor plan with large roll-up garage door windows that allow patrons to walk freely from the spacious outdoor patios to the inner dining areas and bar. Uptown Tavern will be located at 1236 University Ave. in Hillcrest, the former site of Ono Sushi.

“There is so much more to the property than the interior space,” Cohen said. “There is a large back patio, a couple back houses and an upper back house. The property is about 7,000 square feet in total. It really is incredible.”
Most of Uptown Tavern’s seating will be outdoors, and those wishing to dine privately can reserve the back houses, Cohen said. “Those will be converted to private dining areas. There’s a lot of space which could be utilized for weddings, rehearsal dinners or other events,” he said.
Boasting exterior and interior design work masterfully crafted by the incredibly talented hands of Michael Soriano, the space takes on a true tavern personality with kicked up décor. Focused on a “super local” approach, the food menu will offer something for everyone with dishes imagined by the creative culinary mind of West Coast Tavern Executive Chef Eli Freebairn, to be paired with an extensive list of crafted cocktails and variety of 20 taps featuring the best variety of beers San Diego has to offer. Built to be a welcome, lively place for everyone to gather, Uptown Tavern plans to be the go-to spot to meet up with friends and treat visiting guests to a glimpse of what it truly means to live in San Diego.
