There's no need for the DeLorean to venture back in time. Join the Gaslamp Quarter Historical Foundation as they present the 12th Annual Fall Back Festival on Sunday, November 4th, 2012 from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm in front of the Gaslamp Museum at 4th and Island Avenues.
Each year, as we set our clocks back an hour to end Daylight Savings, the Gaslamp Quarter falls back in time to the 1880s when Bum the Dog, Wyatt Earp and Alonzo Horton roamed the streets. Three blocks of the Gaslamp Quarter are transformed into a western town of yesteryear with 1880’s storefronts, a Sarsaparilla Saloon and the town Jail. Ladies and gentlemen stroll the streets dressed in Victorian garb, the Alpine Outlaws have a high-noon shootout, and there are activities galore for the kids.
The idea, of course, is to make history fun and to bring the past to life. Kids can pan for gold with actual prospectors, observe a real blacksmith plying his trade, saddle up for an adventurous pony ride, or learn to churn butter and dip your own candles. There is fun to be had for everyone in the family. Capture the moment by taking a time-period portrait complete with traditional Wild West attire and props. Or visit one of the cultural booths to learn about all the different nationalities and how they have contributed to the fabric of San Diego.
With all of the exploring you are certain to do, be sure to take a moment to chow down with free hot dogs from Dick's Last Resort and free ice cream sundaes from Ghirardelli's at the Sarsaparilla Saloon. Kids and adults can also enter into one of our spaghetti-, pie-, or ice cream-eating contests for your chance to win some awesome prizes.
The timeless and cherished tradition of the Fall Back Festival is free and open to the public. Some activities such as the carnival rides will require a minimal charge. With loads of historical demonstrators and interactive activities, this is the perfect event for spending the afternoon with family and friends. Fall Back is produced by the Gaslamp Quarter Historical Foundation, and helps to advance our mission of preserving the history and culture of the Gaslamp Quarter and providing a living history of San Diego.
