Never a dull moment in the San Diego craft beer scene! Ballast Point has announced that another location is in the works, set to open in Little Italy in late summer 2013. The 9,000-square-foot facility on India Street will serve as the breeding ground for the company’s latest brewing experiments in a bold new move to expand their already popular selection of beers.
“This location will offer many of the same great beers that we produce and pour at Home Brew Mart and Scripps Ranch, in addition to many of the experimental beers we create in Little Italy,” marketing manager Hilary Cocalis said.
The company has selected Director of R&D / Specialist Brewer Colby Chandler, a 15-year veteran of Ballast Point, to head up brewing operations at the Little Italy location. In addition to spearheading his own thirst-quenching concoctions, Chandler will oversee Ballast Point employees who will be given the opportunity to take their home brewing skills to the next level by creating small batches to be sold in the Little Italy location.
“We are leaving it open to the creativity of our employees, many of whom are home brewers,”Cocalis said. “We plan to do more sours and barrel-aging, but really anything goes.”
Those inventive brews that gain popularity in Little Italy may then be sold at the Home Brew Mart and the Scripps Ranch location.
“Our aim is to discover new recipes that we love to drink and that we can share with others,” Cocalis said. “Our hope is that many of these beers will be successful enough to "graduate" to our larger breweries.”
The newest location is also a step outside of the norm for Ballast Point as it will include a full-service restaurant. The company has hired on Le Cordon Bleu-trained Executive Chef Colin MacLaggan to create a unique, seasonal and beer-complimentary (and possibly beer-infused) menu.
Ballast Point Little Italy will be located at 2215 India St. Follow the happenings of Ballast Point at https://www.facebook.com/BallastPoint or visit them at http://www.ballastpoint.com.
