PB Landmark, Tavern, Reopens with First-Ever Menu, New “Tap Tables” and More

July 15, 2013

Tavern at the Beach, a Pacific Beach-area institution, has recently reopened after having been closed for renovations since early April of this year. Formerly called Tavern at the Beach, and now known as just “Tavern,” the bar underwent major renovations over the past few months. The addition of a full-service kitchen and an entirely new upstairs floor, utilized for office space, are just two of the many upgrades Tavern fans can’t see.

Tavern ‘s teamed up with construction experts to extend the bar, put it in the middle of the space, and double the number of beers on tap. A new keg room proudly houses craft brews and kegs with windowed walls, allowing curiosity to take the keg instead of the cake. Select booths have even been fitted with beer taps right in the adjacent wall. Customers can now serve themselves with a direct “booth-side” hook-up to the keg room.

Among the additions, is a brand new full-service kitchen featuring Americanized pub favorites with a twist. The menu was co-created by the Tavern team and Executive Chef Kevin Templeton of barleymash and promises innovative soon-to-be favorites like double beer-battered bacon. This dish features applewood smoked bacon encased in a Red Trolley beer batter, with jack honey mustard and green mango and jicama slaw served alongside habanero jelly. The menu includes a host of good eats like soft garlic butter pretzel sticks served with jack honey mustard, Stoli Peach mustard, whole grain honey porter mustard with a side of roasted serrano beer cheese. Taking it’s beach-adjacent location to heart, the new menu includes also a creation called crispy plantain-coconut jumbo shrimp, served with green mango and jicama slaw, Stoli peach mustard, habanero jelly and mango-mojito sauce.

For the past 16 years, Tavern has been owned and operated by the Verant Group. Located in the heart of the San Diego’s hottest neighborhoods, other Verant Group establishments include Sandbar Sports Grill in Mission Beach, North Park’s True North Tavern and West Coast Tavern, and Uptown Tavern in Hillcrest.

Regular business hours at the Tavern are each day from 11 a.m. until 2 a.m., seven days a week. Located at 1200 Garnet Avenue or online at www.tavernatthebeach.com, the bar welcomes back the regulars and newcomers this summer.
