Surf's Biggest Names Come to San Diego in SD as Oceanside Hosts Supergirl Pro | August 8-10

August 5, 2014

ASP’s Paul Mitchell Supergirl Pro Surf competition returns to Oceanside Aug 8-10. All the biggest names in women’s surfing will be on hand for the FREE event – including defending champion Malia Manuel, Bethany Hamilton, Alana Blanchard, Coco Ho, Courtney Conlogue, and Sage Erickson.

Not only will this years event be the largest female surfing competition in ASP history, but it will also serve as the lone women’s ASP qualifying event scheduled in the United States for the 2014 season and plays a critical role for surfers looking to solidify their position on the 2015 ASP Women’s World Championship Tour (WCT).

“With the Paul Mitchell Supergirl Pro currently representing the only women’s qualifying event in the U.S., this contest is extremely important in the girls' qualification process for next year’s WCT,” Jessi Miley-Dyer, ASP Women’s Tour Manager said. “Since this event falls towards the end of the women’s qualifying season, results at the Paul Mitchell Supergirl Pro could be make-or-break for girls on the qualifying bubble.”

In addition to being the only Women’s Star event in the U.S., the Paul Mitchell Supergirl Pro will also be the largest female contest in the world with One Hundred Four (104) of the planet's top female pros expected to compete.  Some of the world-class surfers registered to participate include Alana Blanchard (Kauai, HI), Malia Manuel (Kauai, HI), Coco Ho (Oahu, HI), Courtney Conlogue (Santa Ana, CA), Laura Enever (Sydney, Australia), Bianca Buitendag (Johannesburg, South Africa), Dmity Stoyle (Queensland, Australia), Alessa Quizon (Honolulu, HI), Johanne Defay (Le Puy-en-Velay, France), Nikki Van Dijk (Victoria, Australia), Sage Erickson (Malibu, CA), Paige Hareb (New Plymouth, NZ), Pauline Ado (Bayonne, France), Sofia Mulanovich (Lima, Peru) and Bethany Hamilton (Lihue, HI).

”I can’t begin to explain how excited all of the girls are about this event,” said Malia Manuel, the 5th ranked surfer in the world and the Supergirl Pro defending champion.  “It’s so amazing to have a contest like this in the US that focuses entirely on women’s surfing. I've been to the event every year, but being the defending champion makes it even more special in 2014.”

In addition to the best surfing talent in the world, the Supergirl Pro features an action-packed festival village that features live bands, comedy, art, yoga, fitness, dance, female surf films, seminars, autographs from the pros, free hair styling by Paul Mitchell and many other female-inspired activities.

"We are really pleased about the expansion of the Supergirl Pro in 2014 and the record-breaking field of women participating," said Rick Bratman, CEO of ASA Entertainment, the event’s management company and one of the leading producers of action sports event and television programming in the US.  "We are proud to have supported women’s surfing for eight years and to have provided a platform for important causes around sustainability and breast cancer awareness.”

“Paul Mitchell is thrilled to be involved with such an amazing group of women, and we are proud to have the largest field of talent in women’s surfing competing at our event,” said Julie Solwold, Vice President of Global Sports and Events at John Paul Mitchell Systems.  “These girls have style, grace, beauty and athleticism that align perfectly with our brand, and we are excited to help them gain much-deserved exposure for their sport.”

The Paul Mitchell Supergirl Pro is the first event of the 2014 Supergirl Jam Series, the action sports industry’s largest all-female competition and lifestyle series, featuring more than 175 female pros in surfing, skateboarding and snowboarding.

“The Supergirl Pro serves as a platform for the embodiment of female strength and leadership through action sports and a celebration of the iconic Supergirl S-Shield,” said Karen McTier, Executive Vice President of Domestic Licensing and Worldwide Marketing, Warner Bros. Consumer Products.  “We are thrilled to be hosting the series for the 8th year, and we applaud the athletes as they inspire young women everywhere with their skill, intelligence, independence and overall passion.”

The event will run on Friday, August 8 and Saturday, August 9, from 8am to 5pm and on Sunday, August 10, from 10am to 4pm.
